Example of a Fiber Optic Sensor

Example of a Fiber Optic Sensor

Page Content

A common example of a fiber optic sensor is a Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensor used for measuring strain, temperature, or pressure.

Fiber optic sensors are devices that use optical fibers to detect changes in physical quantities by modulating light properties such as intensity, phase, polarization, or wavelength . One widely used example is the Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensor, which is an intrinsic sensor where the fiber itself acts as the sensing element. FBG sensors reflect specific wavelengths of light, and any strain or temperature change alters the reflected wavelength, allowing precise measurement . Another example is a Faraday Effect-based fiber optic current sensor, which measures electrical current by detecting the rotation of light polarization caused by a magnetic field around a conductor. These sensors are non-contact, immune to electromagnetic interference, and suitable for high-voltage environments, such as monitoring power transmission lines in power plants . Extrinsic fiber optic sensors provide another example, where the fiber transmits light to and from an external sensing element. For instance, a fiber can relay radiation from inside a jet engine to a pyrometer outside, enabling temperature measurement in extreme conditions where conventional sensors cannot operate . Other examples include intensity-based sensors, microbend sensors, and evanescent wave sensors, which detect changes in light intensity due to environmental factors like vibration, pressure, or chemical presence . These sensors are compact, resistant to electromagnetic interference, and can be multiplexed along a single fiber for distributed sensing over long distances . In summary, Fiber Bragg Grating sensors, Faraday Effect current sensors, and extrinsic temperature sensors are practical examples of fiber optic sensors, each demonstrating the versatility and precision of optical fiber technology in industrial, structural, and electrical applications .

Fiber-optic sensor

Extrinsic fiber-optic sensors use an optical fiber cable, normally a multimode one, to transmit modulated light from either a non-fiber optical sensor, or an electronic sensor connected to an optical transmitter. A major benefit of extrinsic sensors is their ability to reach places which are otherwise inaccessible. An example is the measurement of temperature inside aircraft jet engines by using a fiber to transmit radiation into a radiation pyrometer located outside the engine. Extrinsic sensors can also be used in the same w
