Physical Protection of Optical Cables

Indoor and outdoor cables face different risks. Indoor cables, such as patch cords and pigtails, are sensitive to bending, over-pulling, and contamination. To protect them, maintain proper bend radius, avoid crushing or stepping on cables, and keep connectors clean . Outdoor cables encounter environmental hazards like UV exposure, temperature extremes, moisture, rodents, and accidental digging. Protective measures include using armored cables, conduits, waterproof jackets, and burial at proper depths. Warning signs and markers help prevent accidental excavation .   • Optical Line Protection (OLP): Offers port-level protection, switching traffic between line ports to maintain service.
  • Client-Side Protection: Protects traffic at the client level, useful for high-capacity transponders.
  • Y-Cable Protection: Functions like an optical splitter, providing both line- and client-side protection. Traffic switches to the backup path when the working path is interrupted and returns once restored . These mechanisms are critical for network survivability, ensuring that audio, video, and data traffic remain uninterrupted even during fiber cuts or node failures.
