Cables on trays must be properly supported, spaced, grounded, and organized to comply with NEC standards and ensure safety, reliability, and maintainability.

Cable Types and Tray Selection

Only use cables rated for open-air environments, such as Tray Rated (Type TC) or Metal-Clad (Type MC) cables, suitable for the intended voltage and load . Select the tray type—ladder, perforated, or solid-bottom—based on cable type, load, and environmental conditions. Ladder trays provide ventilation and easy cable entry, while perforated trays support lighter loads .

Tray Sizing and Fill Limits

Calculate tray width and depth according to the number and type of cables. Overfilled trays can cause overheating and damage. NEC guidelines specify:

  • Power cables: maximum 40% of tray cross-sectional area
  • Control cables: maximum 50% of tray cross-sectional area Maintain proper spacing to allow airflow and prevent derating of conductor ampacity .

Installation and Routing

  • Lay cables neatly, avoiding excessive bending or kinks.
  • Use cable ties or straps to organize cables by voltage and function.
  • Leave slack for expansion, movement, or future adjustments .
  • Supports should be spaced 1.5 to 3 meters apart, depending on tray type and load .
  • Ensure vertical clearance of at least 12 inches above trays for maintenance access .

Separation and EMI Considerations

High-power and low-power cables must be separated to prevent electromagnetic interference (EMI). Use dividers or separate trays when necessary, and avoid long parallel runs of mixed-voltage cables .

Grounding and Bonding

Metallic trays can serve as equipment grounding conductors (EGC) if bonded properly. Use listed connectors or bonding jumpers across tray sections to maintain a continuous, low-impedance path for fault current .

Fire Safety and Penetrations

When trays pass through fire-rated walls or floors, use approved firestop systems to maintain the building's fire-resistance rating and prevent fire or smoke spread .

Labeling and Documentation

Clearly label cables for identification and maintenance. Maintain updated wiring maps and documentation for future audits or troubleshooting .

Maintenance

Regularly inspect trays for loose clamps, corrosion, overfilled sections, or sagging. Proper preventive maintenance extends tray lifespan and ensures system reliability . By following these requirements, cable tray installations remain safe, code-compliant, and efficient, minimizing risks of overheating, mechanical failure, and electromagnetic interference while allowing for future expansion.
