How to secure the fiber optic cable to the splice box

How to secure the fiber optic cable to the splice box

Page Content

Secure fiber optic cables by properly preparing, sealing, clamping, and organizing fibers within the splice closure or termination box to ensure stability and prevent damage.

Cable Preparation and Entry

Begin by removing the outer jacket of the fiber cable according to the manufacturer's instructions, exposing the loose tubes and strength members. Clean and abrade the cable surface to ensure proper adhesion for sealing materials. Select sealing rings or grommets that match the cable diameter and slide them onto the cable before inserting it into the splice box entry port. For cables with metallic shielding, ensure proper grounding and bonding at this stage .

Sealing and Strain Relief

Wrap the cable end with self-adhesive sealing tape between the sealing rings to create a tight seal. Insert the cable into the closure and secure it using a hose clamp or cable tie to the base of the splice box. Tighten the clamp to prevent movement, which provides strain relief and protects the fibers from stress or accidental pulling . Seal any unused ports with plugs and tape to maintain environmental protection.

Fiber Management Inside the Splice Box

Reserve 1.5 loops of fiber behind the splice tray to allow for splicing and future maintenance. Use nylon ties or braided tubing to secure buffer tubes at tray entry points, distinguishing outgoing and customer fibers with color-coded ties (e.g., green for outgoing, blue for customer). Carefully place fibers in the splice tray, maintaining the minimum bend radius and avoiding pinching when stacking trays or closing the lid . Ribbon fibers require special strain-relief kits or tubing to prevent bending in the wrong direction.

Splicing and Tray Closure

Perform fusion or mechanical splicing according to the fiber type and manufacturer instructions. Insert splices into the tray slots and coil any excess fiber neatly. Once all fibers are secured, place the tray lid and stack additional trays as needed, ensuring fibers are not stressed or pinched. Conduct a visual fault locator (VFL) or OTDR test to verify fiber integrity before final closure .

Final Checks

  • Ensure all cables are clamped and immovable.
  • Verify proper grounding for shielded cables.
  • Confirm that all fibers maintain the correct bend radius.
  • Label fibers clearly for easy identification during maintenance .

Following these steps ensures that fiber optic cables are secure, organized, and protected, minimizing signal loss and extending the life of the network.
