How to check the wavelength of optical fiber cables

How to check the wavelength of optical fiber cables

Page Content

The wavelength of optical fiber cables is measured using instruments like optical spectrum analyzers or power meters set to specific wavelengths, following standardized procedures for accuracy.

Instruments for Wavelength Measurement

  1. Optical Spectrum Analyzer (OSA): This device measures the spectral content of light in the fiber, allowing precise determination of the wavelength of the transmitted signal. It is particularly useful for single-mode fibers and WDM systems where multiple wavelengths are present .
  2. Optical Power Meter with Wavelength Setting: Power meters can measure optical power at specific wavelengths. By setting the meter to the wavelength of the light source, you can verify the operating wavelength of the fiber. Standard telecom wavelengths are 850 nm, 1310 nm, and 1550 nm for multimode and single-mode fibers .
  3. OTDR (Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer): While primarily used for loss and fault detection, some OTDRs can provide wavelength-specific measurements when combined with appropriate test sources .

Standardized Methods

For single-mode fibers, the cut-off wavelength can be measured according to IEC 60793-1-44:2023. There are three main methods:

  • Method A: Uses a 22-meter-long fiber not in a cable.
  • Method B: Uses a 22-meter-long fiber already in a cable.
  • Method C: Uses a shorter, 2-meter-long fiber not in a cable. Reference measurements are required, using either the bend-reference technique (bending the fiber to determine cut-off) or the multimode-reference technique with category A1 multimode fiber .

Practical Measurement Steps

  1. Prepare the Fiber: Clean all connectors and ensure the fiber is properly terminated.
  2. Select the Instrument: Use an OSA for precise wavelength analysis or a power meter for simpler verification.
  3. Set the Wavelength: Match the instrument to the expected wavelength of the light source.
  4. Connect the Fiber: Attach the fiber to the instrument using appropriate adapters.
  5. Record the Measurement: Read the wavelength or power at the set wavelength. For cut-off wavelength, follow the IEC standard method chosen.
  6. Verify Accuracy: Use reference fibers or calibration sources to ensure measurement reliability .

Notes on Fiber Types

  • Multimode fibers: Typically tested at 850 nm and 1300 nm.
  • Single-mode fibers: Typically tested at 1310 nm and 1550 nm, where attenuation is minimal . By following these procedures and using calibrated instruments, you can accurately measure the wavelength characteristics of optical fiber cables, ensuring proper performance in communication systems.
