Fiber optic trench construction involves careful planning, trench excavation, conduit installation, cable pulling, and testing to ensure long-term network reliability.

Planning and Surveying

The process begins with a site survey and network planning. Engineers assess the terrain, existing utilities, and potential obstacles to determine the optimal route for the fiber optic cables. Advanced tools like GIS, CAD, GNSS with RTK, and LIDAR are used to create detailed maps and models, ensuring precise placement of conduits and minimizing future disruptions. Permits and approvals from local authorities are obtained to comply with regulations and right-of-way requirements .

Trench Excavation

Once planning is complete, a trench is dug to bury the conduit. Typical trench depth ranges from 1 to 1.2 meters (3–4 feet), though local regulations, soil conditions, frost depth, and traffic considerations may require adjustments. In urban areas, micro-trenching or narrow trenching may be used to minimize disruption, while directional boring can avoid surface excavation under streets or sidewalks .

Conduit Installation

Conduits, usually PVC or HDPE, are installed in the trench to protect the fiber cables. Some conduits include pre-installed innerducts with pulling tapes to facilitate cable installation. A conductive marker tape is often buried above the conduit to help locate it in the future and warn against accidental digging. Conduits should be kept straight with secure joints, avoiding sharp bends to maintain the fiber's minimum bend radius .

Cable Pulling

Fiber optic cables are pulled through the installed conduits using specialized equipment. Care is taken to control pulling tension and bend radius to prevent damage. Depending on the environment, either loose tube fiber or armored fiber is selected. Loose tube cables resist moisture and environmental changes, while armored cables provide extra protection against mechanical stress, rodents, and construction activities .

Backfilling and Protection

After cable installation, the trench is backfilled with soil, sand, or other protective materials. In high-risk areas, deeper burial or reinforced conduits may be used to enhance durability. The surface is restored to its original condition, and any required documentation for future maintenance is completed .

Splicing, Termination, and Testing

Since fiber cables are not continuous, splicing is performed to join sections, ensuring minimal signal loss. Termination points are installed at distribution hubs or customer premises. Finally, the network undergoes testing to verify signal integrity, continuity, and performance before being activated .
