Principle of Rectangular Fiber Optic Sensing

Principle of Rectangular Fiber Optic Sensing

Page Content

Rectangular fiber optic sensors operate by detecting changes in light propagation caused by environmental effects on the fiber, with the rectangular geometry enhancing sensitivity and spatial resolution.

Principle of Operation

Rectangular fiber optic sensors are typically intrinsic sensors, where the fiber itself acts as the sensing element. The rectangular cross-section of the fiber modifies the light propagation characteristics, such as mode distribution and polarization, making the sensor more sensitive to external perturbations like strain, pressure, temperature, or vibration . When an external physical quantity interacts with the fiber, it induces changes in:

  • Light intensity: Variations in transmitted or reflected light due to bending, microbending, or stress-induced scattering .
  • Phase or optical path length: Environmental effects alter the effective refractive index or fiber length, causing phase shifts detectable via interferometric techniques like Michelson or Mach-Zehnder interferometers .
  • Wavelength or spectral shift: Changes in strain or temperature can shift the wavelength of light in the fiber, measurable with spectral analysis for high-precision sensing .

Role of Rectangular Geometry

The rectangular shape of the fiber core provides:

  • Enhanced mode confinement: Light propagates in well-defined modes, increasing sensitivity to small deformations.
  • Directional sensitivity: The rectangular geometry allows the sensor to detect strain or pressure along specific axes more effectively than circular fibers.
  • Improved spatial resolution: The flat surfaces facilitate coupling with microstructures or cantilevered elements, enabling precise measurement of localized effects .

Signal Detection

The modulated light exiting the rectangular fiber is analyzed using:

  • Intensity-based detection: Photodetectors measure changes in light intensity caused by bending or stress.
  • Interferometric detection: Phase shifts are converted into measurable interference patterns, providing high sensitivity.
  • Spectral analysis: Wavelength shifts are monitored to quantify strain, temperature, or other measurands with high accuracy .

Applications

Rectangular fiber optic sensors are used in:

  • Structural health monitoring: Detecting stress, strain, or vibration in bridges, aircraft, and buildings.
  • Precision instrumentation: Measuring micro-displacements or temperature variations in laboratory setups.
  • Harsh environments: Their immunity to electromagnetic interference and high-temperature resistance makes them suitable for industrial and aerospace applications . In summary, rectangular fiber optic sensors leverage the intrinsic properties of the fiber and its geometry to convert environmental changes into measurable optical signals, offering high sensitivity, directional detection, and robustness in challenging conditions.
