Cable tray unloading techniques

Page Content

Safe unloading of cable trays and reels involves using forklifts or rolling methods, securing drums properly, and preventing damage to cables and flanges.

General Principles

When unloading cable trays or reels, the primary goal is to prevent physical damage to the cables and the supporting trays while ensuring personnel safety. Cables and trays should be handled by trained personnel using appropriate lifting equipment, and all movements should be controlled to avoid sudden impacts or twisting of the cables .

Forklift Unloading

  1. Positioning Forks: Insert forklift tynes fully under both flanges of the drum or tray to distribute weight evenly and avoid flange damage .
  2. Lifting: Gradually lift the drum to a height that allows safe removal from the transport vehicle or container. Avoid lifting by the top flange or the cable itself .
  3. Transporting: Move the drum slowly, keeping it horizontal and stable. Never push drums sideways with forklift tynes, as this can damage the flanges .
  4. Lowering: Gently lower the drum onto a firm, level surface, preferably on battens or skids to prevent flange rot or deformation .

Rolling Method

For some containers, drums can be rolled out after loosening lash belts and removing wedge-shaped chocks . Ensure the drum is controlled during rolling to prevent sudden movement or cable kinking. Use wooden planks or chocks to stop rolling if necessary.

Securing and Protection

  • Lashing and Chocks: Drums should be secured with lashing belts and wedge-shaped chocks during transport to prevent sidewise movement .
  • Cable Protection: Avoid placing ropes or chains directly over cables. Use protective padding to prevent insulation damage .
  • Spacing: Maintain sufficient space between drums or trays to prevent contact and allow air circulation .
  • Avoid Dropping: Never drop drums or trays; impact can damage both the cable and the tray system .

Installation Considerations

Once unloaded, cable trays should be installed according to BS EN 61537 standards for cable ladder and tray systems . Cables should be laid carefully to avoid sharp bends, kinks, or twisting, with power cables at the bottom and control cables on top. Use non-magnetic clamps and maintain proper spacing between cables .

Safety Precautions

  • Ensure personnel are trained and competent in handling heavy reels and trays .
  • Use cranes, slings, or spreaders for larger reels to minimize pressure on flanges .
  • Always follow HSE and local safety regulations during unloading and installation . By following these techniques, cable trays and reels can be unloaded safely, minimizing the risk of damage to the cables and ensuring a smooth installation process.
