An ONU primarily converts optical signals to electrical signals for end users and can aggregate customer traffic upstream, but it does not replace the role of a central aggregation switch.

Role of ONU in PON Networks

In a Passive Optical Network (PON), the ONU (Optical Network Unit) or ONT (Optical Network Terminal) is located near the end user and serves as the interface between the optical fiber network and the customer's devices. Its main functions include:

  • Optical-to-electrical signal conversion for user devices such as computers, phones, or routers .
  • Traffic aggregation and grooming, where it collects data from multiple customer endpoints and organizes it for upstream transmission to the OLT (Optical Line Terminal), .
  • Support for multiple services, including IPTV, VoIP, and internet access, by managing bursty traffic efficiently .

Aggregation vs. ONU Functionality

While the ONU aggregates traffic from connected end-user devices, it does not function as a full aggregation switch in the traditional Ethernet sense. A central aggregation switch typically:

  • Combines multiple network links from different access points or ONUs.
  • Provides higher-level switching, routing, and redundancy features.
  • Connects directly to the OLT or core network to manage large-scale traffic flows . The ONU's aggregation is limited to local subscriber traffic, and it forwards this traffic upstream to the OLT, which then interfaces with the aggregation switch or IP network. In other words, the ONU acts as a micro-aggregation point, but the OLT and aggregation switch handle broader network-level aggregation and management .

Summary

  • ONU/ONT: Aggregates traffic from end users, converts optical signals to electrical, and sends data upstream.
  • OLT: Centralized device that aggregates all ONUs' traffic and connects to the IP network or aggregation switch.
  • Aggregation switch: Combines multiple OLT or ONU links, providing redundancy, higher bandwidth, and network management. Therefore, while an ONU performs local aggregation, it cannot replace a central aggregation switch in the network hierarchy. Its aggregation is limited to the subscriber side, and the OLT remains the key point for network-wide traffic consolidation.
