Relay protection for transmission line distance

Relay protection for transmission line distance

Page Content

Distance relay protection uses impedance measurement to detect faults and isolate only the affected section of a transmission line, providing fast, selective, and reliable protection.

Working Principle

A distance relay, also known as an impedance relay, operates by measuring the apparent impedance between the relay location and the fault point on a transmission line. It continuously monitors the voltage (V) and current (I) at the relay terminal and calculates the apparent impedance using the formula Z_app = V/I. Since the line impedance per unit length is known, the relay can estimate the distance to the fault as d ≈ Z_app / z, where z is the line impedance per unit length. If the measured impedance falls within a preset operating region and directional criteria are satisfied, the relay issues a trip signal to isolate the faulted section .

Zone Protection

Distance relays typically use a three-zone scheme for graded protection:

  • Zone 1: Covers approximately 80% of the line from the relay location and operates instantaneously to clear faults within the primary section without delay .
  • Zone 2: Extends beyond Zone 1, often set to 120% of the line impedance, providing backup protection for faults not cleared by Zone 1 and for adjacent line sections .
  • Zone 3: Covers further sections or adjacent lines, sometimes disabled, and provides longer-time backup protection . This zoning ensures selective tripping, preventing unnecessary outages in unaffected parts of the network.

Types and Characteristics

Distance relays can have different characteristics, such as Mho, Quadrilateral, or Offset Mho, which define the relay's operating region in the R–X plane. Modern digital relays can compensate for fault resistance, CT saturation, and parallel line effects, improving accuracy and reliability .

Advantages

  • Fast and selective fault clearing without relying on remote tripping.
  • Distance measurement allows precise fault location estimation.
  • Backup protection through multiple zones ensures system security.
  • Directional capability enhances sensitivity and prevents maloperation.
  • Suitable for high-voltage and long transmission lines, including EHV and sub-transmission systems .

Applications

Distance relays are widely used for:

  • Primary protection of transmission lines.
  • Backup protection for generator feeders and interconnected lines.
  • Pilot protection schemes, such as directional comparison or permissive overreach.
  • Monitoring reactive power and system stability in advanced protection schemes . In summary, distance relay protection is a critical element in modern power systems, providing fast, reliable, and selective protection by measuring line impedance and isolating only the faulted section while maintaining system stability and minimizing service interruptions.
