Overview of Trunk Optical Cables

A trunk optical cable is a high-capacity, pre-terminated fiber optic assembly designed to carry multiple data channels simultaneously between key network points, acting as the backbone of a data center or network infrastructure . These cables are typically pre-terminated with high-density multi-fiber connectors such as MPO (Multi-fiber Push-On) or MTP connectors, enabling plug-and-play deployment and reducing installation errors . Fiber Modes

Trunk cables are available in two primary optical fiber modes:

Connector and Deployment Considerations

Trunk cables often use MPO/MTP connectors, which can integrate 8, 12, 16, or 24 fibers per connector, allowing a single trunk to carry 48, 72, 96, or even 192 fibers . This high-density design reduces the number of physical connections on patch panels and simplifies network management. Trunk cables are pre-tested in the factory to ensure consistent transmission quality, eliminating the need for field splicing . Deployment scenarios include connecting the Main Distribution Area (MDA) to Equipment Distribution Areas (EDA) in data centers, serving as the backbone for high-speed networks, and supporting modular plug-and-play systems like Corning's EDGE™ MTP® trunks .
