Fiberglass pigtail splicing method

Fiberglass pigtail splicing method

Page Content

Fiber optic pigtails are spliced to incoming fiber cables using either fusion or mechanical splicing, with fusion splicing offering the lowest loss and highest reliability.

What is a Fiber Optic Pigtail?

A fiber optic pigtail is a short length of optical fiber with a factory-terminated connector on one end and a bare fiber on the other. The connector end plugs into equipment or patch panels, while the bare fiber is designed to be permanently joined to the incoming fiber cable in the field. This approach ensures high-quality, low-loss connections without the need for field polishing or connector installation .

Splicing Methods

1. Fusion Splicing

Fusion splicing is the most common method for single-mode fibers and is preferred for permanent, low-loss connections . The process involves:

  • Preparation: Strip the fiber coating, clean the bare fiber with lint-free wipes and 99% isopropyl alcohol, and cleave the fiber to a precise 90-degree angle using a high-precision cleaver .
  • Splicing: Use a fusion splicer to align the fiber cores and apply an electric arc to melt and fuse the fibers into a single continuous strand .
  • Protection: Slide a heat-shrink splice protection sleeve over the joint and cure it in the splicer's oven to provide mechanical strength and environmental protection . Fusion splicing provides very low insertion loss, minimal reflectance, and high reliability, making it ideal for backbone networks and critical connections.

2. Mechanical Splicing

Mechanical splicing involves aligning two fiber ends in a precision sleeve or gel-filled holder without melting them together . Key points include:

  • The fibers are held in place by mechanical pressure or index-matching gel.
  • It is often used for temporary repairs, multimode fibers, or situations where fusion splicing is not feasible.
  • Mechanical splices are easier to dismantle but generally have slightly higher insertion loss compared to fusion splices.

Choosing the Right Method

  • Single-mode fibers: Fusion splicing is preferred for permanent, low-loss connections.
  • Multimode fibers or temporary setups: Mechanical splicing can be sufficient.
  • Field conditions: Fusion splicing requires clean, controlled conditions and precise tools, while mechanical splicing is more forgiving but less optimal for long-term performance .

Practical Considerations

  • Always use factory-terminated pigtails rather than field-terminated connectors for single-mode fibers to ensure consistent performance .
  • Proper cleaning, stripping, and cleaving are critical; errors in preparation can compromise even the best splicing equipment .
  • Protect the splice with heat-shrink sleeves or splice trays to prevent damage from bending or environmental exposure . By understanding these splicing modes and following proper procedures, network installers can achieve reliable, low-loss fiber connections that maximize long-term network performance.
