How to wire the sockets inside the distribution box

How to wire the sockets inside the distribution box

Page Content

Wiring a distribution box involves connecting the main supply to the main breaker, distributing power to branch circuits via MCBs, and safely wiring sockets and lighting circuits according to proper standards.

Step 1: Plan and Prepare

  • Determine load requirements: Identify the number of lighting points, socket outlets, and special appliances like air conditioners.
  • Select wire sizes: Typically, 2.5mm² wires are used for lighting and standard sockets, while 4mm² wires may be used for high-power appliances like AC units .
  • Choose protective devices: Use a double-pole MCB as the main switch, single-pole MCBs for individual circuits, and an RCCB for earth leakage protection .

Step 2: Main Supply Connection

  • Connect the incoming phase and neutral wires from the main supply to the main MCB in the distribution box .
  • Ensure the main feeder cable can handle the total anticipated load; for example, a 60A single-phase DB may require 16mm² phase and neutral cables .

Step 3: Branch Circuit Wiring

  • Connect each branch circuit from the main MCB to the respective MCBs for lighting, sockets, or special loads .
  • Lighting circuits: Typically 2.5mm² wires, connected to 5–10A MCBs.
  • Socket circuits: 2.5mm² wires for 13A outlets, 4mm² for higher-rated outlets or AC units.
  • Wiring direction: Feed wires from the left side of the DB to branch MCBs and route outgoing wires to the right side .

Step 4: Socket and Lighting Connections

  • Run wires from the MCBs to the socket outlets and light points.
  • Use parallel connections for multiple switches or sockets to simplify wiring .
  • Ensure neutral and earth wires are properly connected to the neutral and earth bars in the DB.

Step 5: Wire Management and Safety

  • Bind wires neatly with plastic ties, maintaining uniform spacing and straight runs .
  • Label circuits clearly for AC, DC, or different voltage levels to avoid confusion.
  • Perform a safety inspection after wiring to check for short circuits, overloads, and proper grounding .

Step 6: Testing

  • Switch on the main MCB and test each branch circuit individually.
  • Verify that sockets and lights operate correctly and that the RCCB trips under simulated leakage conditions. Following these steps ensures a safe, organized, and compliant electrical installation for both the distribution box and connected sockets .
