Several Materials for Photovoltaic Cable Trays

Several Materials for Photovoltaic Cable Trays

Page Content

Photovoltaic cable trays are commonly made from hot-dip galvanized steel, aluminum, Al-Zn-Mg steel, and UV-resistant plastics, each offering specific advantages in corrosion resistance, strength, and durability for solar installations.

Common Materials

1. Hot-Dip Galvanized (HDG) Steel HDG steel is widely used in ground-mounted solar farms due to its strong mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. The thick zinc coating (typically 55–80 micrometers) protects the steel from rust and extends the tray's lifespan to over 25 years, even under intense UV exposure and high temperatures . It is cost-effective and suitable for long spans and heavy DC cable loads . 2. Aluminum Aluminum trays are lightweight, corrosion-resistant, and ideal for rooftop solar installations where weight is a critical factor. Aluminum handles UV exposure well and provides excellent thermal performance, reducing heat buildup around cables . Its lightness also simplifies installation and handling . 3. Al-Zn-Mg Steel Al-Zn-Mg cable trays are made from cold-rolled steel sheets with a double-sided hot-dip coating of aluminum, zinc, and magnesium. This combination provides the physical strength of aluminum and the electrochemical protection of zinc. Al-Zn-Mg trays offer 5–10 times higher corrosion resistance than ordinary galvanized steel, especially at cut edges, and form a dense protective layer over time due to magnesium in the coating . They are suitable for both ground-mounted and rooftop systems requiring long-term durability and aesthetic surface finish. 4. UV-Resistant PVC and Fiber-Reinforced Plastics For indoor or sensitive signal cable applications, UV-resistant plastics provide protection against dust, sand, and water while maintaining flexibility and ease of installation. These materials are lightweight, corrosion-free, and suitable for inverter rooms or desert solar farms where environmental exposure is moderate .

Material Selection Considerations

  • Environmental Exposure: Outdoor solar farms require materials resistant to UV, rain, and temperature fluctuations. HDG steel and Al-Zn-Mg steel are preferred for harsh climates.
  • Mechanical Load: Heavy DC cables and long spans benefit from steel-based trays due to their strength.
  • Weight Constraints: Rooftop installations often favor aluminum or plastic trays to reduce structural load.
  • Longevity and Maintenance: Al-Zn-Mg steel and HDG steel provide long-term durability with minimal maintenance, while plastics may require periodic inspection in high-UV areas. Choosing the right material ensures safe cable routing, reduced thermal load, corrosion resistance, and long-term reliability for photovoltaic systems .
