You cannot plug a fiber optic cable directly into a standard router; it must first connect to an Optical Network Terminal (ONT), which converts the optical signal into an Ethernet signal for the router.

Step 1: Gather Necessary Equipment

  • Fiber optic cable: Usually single-mode with SC/APC or SC/UPC connectors. Handle carefully to avoid dirt or damage.
  • Optical Network Terminal (ONT): Provided by your ISP, converts light signals to electrical signals.
  • Router: Ensure it has a WAN or fiber-compatible port.
  • Ethernet cable: To connect the ONT to the router .

Step 2: Connect Fiber to the ONT

  1. Locate the fiber wall outlet where the ISP's line enters your home.
  2. Remove protective caps from both the fiber cable and the ONT port.
  3. Align the connector using its key or tab and gently push it into the ONT's optical port until it clicks securely. Avoid bending the cable sharply .
  4. Power on the ONT and wait 2–5 minutes for the status lights to stabilize, indicating a successful connection to the ISP network .

Step 3: Connect the ONT to the Router

  1. Use an Ethernet cable to link the ONT's LAN/Ethernet port to the router's WAN port.
  2. Power on the router and wait for the indicator lights to confirm connectivity .

Step 4: Verify the Connection

  • Check the ONT lights: Power should be solid green, PON/Optical should be solid green or blue.
  • Test internet access on a connected device to ensure the router is receiving the signal .

Precautions

  • Always turn off the router before connecting the fiber cable.
  • Avoid bending the fiber cable beyond its minimum bend radius.
  • Handle connectors by the plastic housing to prevent contamination or damage.
  • Place the ONT and router in a dry, ventilated area near power outlets . Following these steps ensures a secure, high-performance fiber connection from your ISP to your router, enabling fast and reliable internet access.
