Construction procedures for power communication optical cables

Page Content

Power communication optical cables, such as OPPC and OPGW, integrate optical fibers with electrical conductors to enable simultaneous power transmission and high-speed data communication.

Types of Power Communication Optical Cables

  1. OPGW (Optical Ground Wire) OPGW cables combine optical fibers with a metallic ground wire, typically installed at the top of transmission towers. The optical fibers are housed in a sealed metal tube at the cable's core, surrounded by steel strength members and aluminum conductors. This design ensures the fibers are protected from electrical interference and mechanical stress while providing grounding for the power line .
  2. OPPC (Optical Power Phase Conductor) OPPC cables integrate optical fibers directly within one of the phase conductors. This allows the cable to carry both electrical power and communication signals simultaneously. OPPC is commonly used in medium and low voltage grids, especially where traditional ground wires are impractical. The fibers are protected by a tube within the conductor, and the cable is reinforced with aluminum alloy wires for mechanical strength .
  3. OPAC (Optical Power Attached Cable) OPAC cables are lightweight, all-dielectric fibers that are wrapped around existing power or ground conductors. They are installed using specialized equipment, often referred to as "Sky-Wrap," and are suitable for expanding communication capacity without replacing existing conductors .

Structural Components

  • Core: Contains the optical fibers, usually single-mode for long-distance transmission. The fibers are enclosed in a protective tube to prevent damage from mechanical stress or environmental factors .
  • Cladding and Coatings: Surround the core to maintain total internal reflection and protect the fiber from moisture and abrasion.
  • Strength Members: Steel or aluminum wires provide tensile strength to withstand wind, ice, and mechanical loads.
  • Conductors: In OPPC and OPGW, aluminum or aluminum alloy conductors carry electrical current or provide grounding.
  • Outer Jacket: Protects the cable from environmental conditions such as UV radiation, temperature extremes, and ice accumulation .

Installation Considerations

  • Aerial Installation: Cables are mounted on transmission towers or poles, either replacing a phase conductor (OPPC) or as a ground wire (OPGW). Proper tensioning and sag calculations are critical to prevent mechanical failure .
  • Underground Installation: In some cases, power communication cables are buried, requiring additional protective sheathing and conduits.
  • Splicing and Termination: Optical fibers require periodic splicing, typically performed on the ground in protective enclosures. Termination points connect the fibers to communication equipment .
  • Safety and Standards: Installation must consider electromagnetic interference, environmental conditions, and compliance with utility standards to ensure reliable operation .

Maintenance Strategy

Regular inspection and monitoring are essential to maintain cable performance. This includes checking the integrity of the protective covers, connection equipment, and surrounding environment. Faults are diagnosed using specialized testing equipment, and repairs are carried out promptly to minimize disruption to both power and communication services .

Summary

Power communication optical cables are engineered to combine electrical power transmission with high-speed optical communication. OPPC, OPGW, and OPAC cables differ in placement, structure, and application, but all prioritize fiber protection, mechanical strength, and reliable signal transmission. Proper design, installation, and maintenance are critical to ensure long-term performance in diverse environmental conditions .
