Albania is developing a strategic multimodal fiber optic network, integrating subsea and terrestrial links to enhance digital connectivity across the Balkans and Mediterranean region.

Fiber Optic Infrastructure in Albania

Albania is investing heavily in high-capacity fiber optic networks to serve as a digital gateway between Europe and the Mediterranean. The Hungarian group 4iG, in cooperation with the Albanian government, is constructing a subsea cable system from Egypt to Albania, positioning the country as a strategic hub for international data traffic. This project includes a major data center in Durres and aims to support future technologies like 5G, while creating hundreds of jobs and strengthening Albania's telecommunications infrastructure . In addition to subsea links, Albania is expanding terrestrial fiber networks, including a high-capacity optical fiber link connecting Albania and Greece. This forms part of a Balkan–Mediterranean digital corridor, enabling faster and more reliable international data transmission and linking Albania to wider European networks . The Albanian Telecommunications Union (ATU) has also deployed over 450 km of fiber and more than 7 points of presence (PoPs) across major cities, establishing a robust national backbone .

Multimodal Connectivity Integration

The ALMONIT-MTC project focuses on improving multimodal transport connectivity between Albania, Montenegro, and Italy. While primarily a transport initiative, it complements digital infrastructure by enhancing cross-border coordination and operational efficiency. The project optimizes inland water and maritime transport, strengthens management skills, and applies EU integrated standards, which indirectly supports the deployment and management of fiber networks in coastal and inland areas .
