A secondary distribution box (sub-distribution board) receives power from the main distribution board and safely distributes it to sub-circuits using MCBs, RCDs, and proper grounding.

Overview

A secondary distribution box (also called a sub-distribution board or SDB) is used to distribute electricity to a specific area, floor, or section of a building. It is connected to the main distribution board (MDB) through appropriately rated cables and serves as an intermediary to manage multiple circuits safely .

Components

  1. Incoming Supply: The SDB receives phase (live) and neutral lines from the main distribution board. These lines are typically connected through a main isolator or double-pole MCB to allow manual disconnection .
  2. Protective Devices:
    • RCCB/RCD: Protects against earth leakage and electric shock by disconnecting the circuit if leakage is detected .
    • MCBs (Miniature Circuit Breakers): Protect individual sub-circuits from overcurrent due to overload or short circuit .
  3. Busbars:
    • Phase busbar: Distributes the live wire to each MCB.
    • Neutral busbar: Connects all neutral wires from sub-circuits.
    • Earth busbar: Connects all protective earth wires to the grounding system .

Wiring Steps

  1. Connect Incoming Lines: Connect the phase and neutral from the main distribution board to the main isolator in the SDB.
  2. RCCB Connection: From the isolator, connect the phase line to the RCCB input. The neutral line is also connected to the RCCB neutral terminal.
  3. Busbar Distribution:
    • Connect the neutral output of the RCCB to the neutral busbar.
    • Connect the phase output of the RCCB to the phase busbar feeding the MCBs.
  4. MCB Connections: Each MCB is connected to the phase busbar and its corresponding neutral to the neutral busbar. The outgoing wires from MCBs supply the sub-circuits (lights, sockets, appliances) in the designated area .
  5. Earthing: All earth wires from sub-circuits are connected to the earth busbar, which is linked to the building's grounding electrode for safety .

Safety and Compliance

  • Ensure correct wire gauge for each circuit based on load requirements.
  • Maintain neat cable management and proper insulation.
  • Use UL/CE-certified components and follow local electrical codes (NEC, IEC, or regional standards), .
