Preparation and Tools

Before starting, gather the following tools and materials: LC connectors (1.25 mm ferrule), fiber strippers, precision cleaver, alcohol wipes or fiber cleaning pens, fusion splicer (optional for factory-quality splicing), heat shrink tubing, crimp rings, patch panels, and testing equipment such as an optical power meter or OTDR. Ensure the workspace is clean, dust-free, and well-lit to prevent contamination of fiber ends .

Step 1: Cable Preparation

  1. Measure and mark the cable ends for stripping, typically around 29 mm from the jacket end for each fiber bundle .
  2. Carefully strip the outer jacket without damaging the Kevlar strength members.
  3. Separate and flare the Kevlar strands to one side.

  3. Secure the fiber using a crimp or mechanical retention method as specified by the connector manufacturer.
  4. For duplex LC connectors, pair fibers according to transmit/receive orientation.

Step 4: Polishing and Inspection

  1. If using pre-polished connectors, this step may be minimal; otherwise, polish the fiber end to achieve a flat or angled finish (UPC or APC) as required .
  2. Inspect each fiber end with a microscope to confirm proper alignment and absence of scratches or debris.

Step 5: Testing and Documentation

  1. Test each fiber for insertion loss and continuity using a power meter or OTDR .
  2. Record the fiber number, color coding, and length for future reference.
  3. Label each connector and secure the cable in a patch panel or distribution frame to prevent movement or stress on the fibers.

Step 6: Final Assembly

Once all 24 fibers are terminated and tested, bundle them neatly, apply strain relief, and ensure proper routing in the patch panel. High-density LC assemblies benefit from careful cable management to maintain performance and prevent bending beyond the minimum bend radius .
