Factory cable trays must comply with NEC and NEMA standards, ensuring proper material selection, load capacity, spacing, grounding, and separation of power and control cables for safe and efficient operation.

Material Selection

Cable trays can be made from aluminum, steel, stainless steel, or fiberglass-reinforced plastic (FRP) depending on environmental conditions and load requirements. Aluminum offers excellent corrosion resistance, steel provides high strength, and FRP is suitable for highly corrosive environments or where a high strength-to-weight ratio is needed . Stainless steel (AISI 316L) is preferred in areas exposed to chlorides or chemicals .

Tray Types and Design

Common tray types include ladder, ventilated trough, solid bottom, channel, and wire mesh trays. Ladder trays are widely used for power cables, while solid or ventilated trays are suitable for instrumentation and control cables . Rung spacing of 6–9 inches (150–230 mm) is recommended for proper cable support and to maintain minimum bend radius .

Installation Requirements

  • Clearances: Maintain at least 12 inches of vertical clearance above trays for installation and maintenance access .
  • Prohibited Areas: Cable trays must not be installed in hoistways or enclosed spaces and must remain accessible .
  • Fill Limits: Power cables should not exceed 40% of the tray's cross-sectional area, and control cables should not exceed 50% .
  • Separation: High-power and low-power cables must be separated to prevent electromagnetic interference (EMI) .
  • Grounding: Metallic trays can serve as equipment grounding conductors (EGC) if they meet NEC requirements .
  • Outdoor Installations: Use sunlight-resistant cables and expansion splice plates to accommodate thermal expansion .

Compliance and Standards

Cable trays must comply with:

  • NEC Article 392 for installation, permitted uses, and fill limits .
  • NEMA VE 1 and VE 2 for metal and nonmetallic tray construction, load/span designations, and fittings .
  • UL 568 for fiberglass tray performance .
  • IEC-61537 for international standards on cable tray systems .

Maintenance and Safety

Proper installation minimizes risks such as overheating, fire, and mechanical failure. Trays should be inspected periodically for damage, corrosion, or overfilling. Nonmetallic trays have additional limitations and must be installed according to manufacturer guidelines .
