Using an optical fiber splice box involves preparing the cables, organizing fibers in splice trays, performing fusion or mechanical splicing, and sealing the box to protect the fibers from environmental damage.

Preparing the Optical Cable

  1. Measure and strip the cable: Prepare a length of about 3 meters. Clean the loose tube and reinforcing core sheath with detergent, remove excess filling material, and polish the outer sheath to approximately 150 mm using sandpaper .
  2. Install sealing rings: Select sealing rings matching the cable diameter, slide them onto the cable, and insert the cable into the corresponding entry hole .
  3. Grounding and sealing: Connect the shield and ground, wrap self-adhesive sealing tape between the rings, and press the sealing end into the cable entry hole .
  4. Secure the cable: Use the throat hoop and cable core bracket to fix the cable to the splice box base, tighten screws, and secure with nylon cable ties. Seal unused holes with plugs and tape .

Organizing Fibers in the Splice Box

  1. Coil fibers: Prepare 1.5 turns of optical fiber and coil the remaining fibers neatly in the box .
  2. Use appropriate trays: Single-core fibers go into single-core buffer tubes, ribbon fibers into ribbon buffer tubes. Secure fibers at the tray entrance with nylon ties .
  3. Stack splice trays: Determine the number of trays based on box capacity. Stack trays carefully, ensuring connectors snap into the fusion splicing unit. Trays can be opened like pages for maintenance .

Splicing Fibers

  1. Fusion splicing: Align fiber ends in a fusion splicer, which melts the glass ends together for a permanent, low-loss connection (typically 0.1 dB loss), .
  2. Mechanical splicing: Align fibers using a sleeve and index-matching gel for temporary or quick connections, with slightly higher loss (~0.3 dB), .
  3. Coil excess fiber: After splicing, coil any excess fiber in the tray to prevent stress or bending damage .

Sealing the Splice Box

  1. Insert sealing strips: Place the sealing strip into the groove around the box body and at the "U" grooves at both ends .
  2. Tighten valves and screws: Ensure the valve nozzle and grounding screw are secured before final packaging .
  3. Check for protection: The box should prevent water, dust, and mechanical damage, keeping fibers safe and organized .

Maintenance Tips

  • Regularly inspect the splice box for signs of moisture or damage .
  • Keep a log of inspections and any maintenance performed.
  • Use proper tools and follow manufacturer guidelines to avoid fiber breakage or signal loss . By following these steps, you ensure that the optical fibers are securely spliced, organized, and protected, maintaining optimal network performance and longevity.
