An MPO interface is a high-density multi-fiber connector that enables simultaneous connection of multiple optical fibers, commonly used in data centers and high-speed optical modules.

Overview of MPO Interfaces

The MPO (Multi-fiber Push On) interface is a standardized optical connector designed to terminate multiple fibers within a single ferrule, typically 8, 12, 16, 24, or more fibers in one connector . It allows high-density fiber connections, reducing cabling complexity and supporting parallel optics for high-speed data transmission, such as 100G, 400G, and beyond . MPO connectors are widely used in data center trunks, MPO-LC cassettes, parallel optics modules, and high-density optical distribution frames (ODFs) .

Structure and Types

MPO connectors can be male (with guide pins) or female (without pins), ensuring proper mating and preventing fiber damage . They are keyed to maintain correct polarity, with a white dot marking the first fiber position. Polarity is critical to ensure that each transmit fiber aligns with the corresponding receive fiber. MPO connectors can have single-row (8–16 fibers) or multi-row configurations (24 fibers or more) for higher-density applications . The MTP® connector is a trademarked, enhanced version of MPO, offering improved mechanical durability while remaining fully compatible with standard MPO connectors .

Polarity and Connection Rules

MPO polarity is managed by the key orientation (Key Up/Key Down) and adapter type. Common polarity methods include:

  • Type A (Up-Down): Key Up/Key Down, straight-through connection
  • Type B (Up-Up): Key Up/Key Up, flipped connection Correct polarity ensures proper alignment of transmit and receive fibers across the network . When connecting MPOs, the following rules apply:
  • Male connectors must mate with female connectors
  • The number of fibers must match (e.g., 12-to-12, 24-to-24)
  • The polish type must match (PC to PC, APC to APC) Single-mode MPO connectors with APC polish have an 8° bevel and require class A adapters for proper mating .

Applications in Optical Modules

MPO interfaces are commonly used in high-speed optical transceivers and modules, such as 400G SR8 or DR8, where multiple fibers transmit data in parallel . MPO transceivers convert electrical signals into optical signals using VCSEL arrays or laser diodes, transmitting data across multiple fibers simultaneously. This enables higher bandwidth, lower latency, and efficient use of space in data centers, telecom networks, enterprise LANs, and content delivery networks . In SFP deployments, MPO connectors are often used with breakout cables that split a single MPO trunk into multiple LC duplex connections, maintaining LC interfaces at the module level while supporting scalable, high-density fiber infrastructure .
