How to install a connector on a single-mode dual-core optical cable

Page Content

To install a connector on a single-mode dual-core optical cable, carefully prepare the fiber, insert it into the connector ferrule, secure it with adhesive or crimping, polish the end face, and inspect the connection for optimal performance.

Tools and Materials Needed

  • Fiber strippers and cleaver
  • Crimping pliers or mechanical crimp tool
  • UV or epoxy adhesive (if applicable)
  • UV curing lamp (for adhesive curing)
  • Alcohol wipes for cleaning
  • Fiber holders and polishing film
  • Dust caps and inspection microscope

Step 1: Prepare the Fiber

  1. Remove the outer jacket and buffer from the dual-core fiber cable carefully, exposing the individual fibers without nicking or bending them .
  2. Clean the exposed fibers with anhydrous alcohol to remove any contaminants .
  3. Measure and strip approximately 11–13 mm of the fiber coating to prepare for connector insertion .

Step 2: Cleave the Fiber

  • Use a fiber cleaver to create a smooth, flat end on each fiber. Proper cleaving ensures minimal signal loss and optimal light transmission .

Step 3: Insert the Fiber into the Connector

  • For SC or LC connectors, align the fiber with the ferrule tip and insert it carefully. SC connectors use a push-pull latch mechanism, while LC connectors use a snap-in design .
  • Ensure the fiber is fully seated in the ferrule and properly aligned to avoid misalignment and signal degradation .

Step 4: Secure the Fiber

  • Depending on the connector type, either apply adhesive and cure it with a UV lamp or mechanically crimp the ferrule to hold the fiber in place .
  • For epoxy-based connectors, allow sufficient curing time as per manufacturer instructions. For mechanical connectors, ensure the crimp is tight and stable .

Step 5: Assemble the Connector Housing

  • Slide the outer housing over the ferrule and fiber, aligning any bump marks or orientation guides to ensure proper assembly .
  • Attach the dust cap to protect the fiber end until installation is complete .

Step 6: Polish the Connector End Face

  • Use polishing film and proper tools to polish the ferrule end until it is smooth and reflective. This step is critical for reducing insertion loss and back reflection .

Step 7: Inspect and Test

  • Examine the connector end face with a fiber optic inspection microscope to check for scratches, debris, or misalignment .
  • Test the fiber link using a fiber optic power meter or network tester to ensure signal quality meets specifications . Following these steps carefully ensures a reliable, low-loss connection for single-mode dual-core optical cables, suitable for high-bandwidth and long-distance applications .
