A DML-based OLT uses a directly modulated laser to convert electrical signals into optical signals for transmission over a passive optical network, enabling cost-effective and compact PON deployments.

Overview of OLTs

An Optical Line Terminal (OLT) is the central device in a Passive Optical Network (PON), located at the service provider's central office. It performs two main functions: converting electrical signals from the provider's network into optical signals for distribution to subscribers, and coordinating multiplexing with Optical Network Terminals (ONTs) or Optical Network Units (ONUs) at the customer side . OLTs manage bandwidth allocation, security, and fault detection, and can support multiple PON standards such as GPON, XG-PON, and XGS-PON .

Role of DML in OLTs

A Directly Modulated Laser (DML) is a type of laser where the optical output is modulated directly by the electrical input signal. In a DML-based OLT:

  • The electrical downstream data from the OLT is applied directly to the laser diode.
  • The laser emits modulated optical signals that travel through the fiber to multiple ONUs/ONTs.
  • DMLs are typically cost-effective, compact, and energy-efficient, making them suitable for small to medium-scale deployments . DMLs are commonly used in short to medium reach PONs (up to ~20 km) because they are simpler and cheaper than externally modulated lasers (EMLs), though they may have higher chirp and slightly lower performance over very long distances or high-speed 10G+ PONs.

Advantages and Considerations

Advantages of DML-based OLTs:

  • Lower cost and smaller footprint compared to EML-based OLTs.
  • Simplified design reduces power consumption and maintenance.
  • Adequate for typical FTTH deployments with moderate distances and split ratios. Considerations:
  • DMLs may introduce chromatic dispersion at higher data rates or longer distances.
  • For ultra-high-speed or long-reach PONs (e.g., 10G-EPON or XGS-PON beyond 20 km), EMLs may be preferred due to better signal integrity.
  • Proper thermal management is required to maintain wavelength stability.

Deployment Example

A DML-based OLT can be deployed in a rack-mounted or box-type OLT configuration, supporting multiple PON ports. Each port can connect to multiple ONUs, typically with split ratios of 1:32 to 1:64, depending on the PON standard . The OLT handles downstream and upstream frame processing, wavelength division multiplexing, and media access control to ensure synchronized communication with all connected ONUs .

Summary

A DML-based OLT is a practical solution for cost-sensitive PON deployments, providing reliable optical signal transmission for FTTH networks. It balances performance, cost, and simplicity, making it ideal for urban, suburban, and small-scale rural networks, while still supporting essential OLT functions like bandwidth management, security, and fault detection .
