Relay Protection Unit Commissioning Process

Relay Protection Unit Commissioning Process

Page Content

Relay protection unit commissioning involves systematic verification of installation, wiring, CT/VT polarity, relay settings, and functional testing to ensure correct operation under fault conditions.

Pre-Commissioning Checks

Before energising the system, verify that all equipment is correctly installed and undamaged during transit. Check that wiring to current transformers (CTs) and voltage transformers (VTs) is correct, and remove any deliberate earth connections such as earthing links on CTs, VTs, and DC supplies to prevent false tripping or hazards . Ensure all mechanical and electrical connections are tight and compliant with the design specifications.

CT and VT Verification

  • Polarity Check: Each CT should be individually tested to confirm primary and secondary polarity markings. Use a low-voltage battery and a centre-zero ammeter to energise the primary winding; the ammeter should show a positive flick on closing and a negative flick on opening .
  • Magnetisation Curve: Measure the CT magnetisation curve by energising the secondary through a variable auto-transformer while keeping the primary open. Identify the knee-point voltage to ensure the CT does not saturate under fault conditions .

Relay Settings and Configuration

After verifying wiring and CT/VT correctness, enter the relay settings either manually via the front panel or using a portable PC with suitable software. A second person should independently check the settings to ensure accuracy. For programmable relays, enter the required scheme logic at this stage . Record all settings for documentation and future reference.

Functional Testing

  • Secondary Injection Tests: Apply secondary voltages and currents to simulate realistic fault conditions. Verify that the relay operates according to its specifications, including tripping and alarm functions .
  • Primary Injection Tests: Inject primary currents to confirm stability for external faults and determine effective current settings for internal faults, particularly for electromechanical relays .
  • Unit Protection and Communication Checks: For relays that communicate with each other, test the communication path using loopback or suitable test equipment to ensure signal integrity and correct operation .

Alarm and Tripping Circuit Verification

Test all tripping and alarm circuits to ensure they respond correctly to simulated faults. This includes verifying the operation of circuit breakers, trip coils, and associated signaling devices .

Documentation and Safety

Maintain detailed records of all tests, settings, and observations. Ensure all personnel follow safety protocols, including the use of appropriate personal protective equipment and adherence to exclusion zones around live apparatus . Competent staff should perform the commissioning, with proper authorisations and training in the use of test equipment.

Post-Commissioning

Once all tests are successfully completed, the protection system can be set to work. Regular maintenance and periodic testing should follow to ensure continued reliability and early detection of potential failures . This procedure ensures that the relay protection unit is correctly installed, configured, and capable of operating reliably under fault conditions, safeguarding equipment and personnel.
