How to configure switches in the on-site distribution box

Configuring switches involves powering on the device, connecting via console, setting IP addresses, VLANs, and access ports, and verifying connectivity.

Step 1: Inspect and Power On the Switch

Before configuration, check the switch hardware for any visible damage and ensure all cables are properly connected. Connect the switch to a power source and verify that the system LEDs indicate normal operation (green for operational, blinking green for software loading) .

Step 2: Connect to the Switch Console

Use a console cable (serial or USB) to connect your computer to the switch. Install a terminal emulator like PuTTY and configure it for a 9600 baud rate serial connection. This allows you to access the switch's command-line interface (CLI) for configuration .

Step 3: Initial Configuration

  • Erase previous configurations if using a spare switch by deleting the VLAN database (e.g., flash:vlan.dat on Cisco switches) .
  • Set a hostname and domain name to identify the switch in your network .
  • Assign an IP address to the management VLAN to enable remote access. Ensure the IP is within your network's management subnet .

Step 4: Configure VLANs and Ports

  • Create VLANs according to your network design. Assign ports to the appropriate VLANs for access or trunking.
  • For trunk ports connecting to other switches, configure the allowed VLANs and enable trunking protocols like 802.1Q .

Step 5: Enable Security and Management Features

  • Configure passwords, enable SSH for secure remote access, and disable unused ports to reduce security risks.
  • Set up SNMP or other monitoring tools if required for network management.

Step 6: Verify Configuration

  • Use commands like show vlan, show ip interface brief, and ping to verify that VLANs, IP addresses, and connectivity are correctly configured .
  • Check LED indicators to ensure all ports are active and functioning.

Step 7: Save Configuration

After completing the setup, save the configuration to the switch's memory to ensure it persists after a reboot (e.g., write memory or copy running-config startup-config on Cisco switches) .

Step 8: Documentation and Testing

Document the switch configuration, including VLAN assignments, IP addresses, and port usage. Test connectivity between devices connected to the switch to confirm proper network operation . Following these steps ensures that your on-site distribution box switches are properly configured, secure, and ready for network traffic. For Dell EMC switches, similar procedures apply, with vendor-specific commands and interface options available in the OS10 Enterprise Edition guide .
