Fiber optic proximity sensors detect objects using light transmitted through optical fibers, offering high precision, non-contact sensing, and resilience in harsh environments.

How They Work

Fiber optic proximity sensors operate by transmitting light from a source, typically an LED or laser diode, through a fiber optic cable to a sensing tip. When an object approaches the tip, it reflects or interrupts the light, which is then returned through the fiber to a photodetector in the amplifier unit. The sensor converts the light signal into an electrical output, with the signal intensity depending on the object's proximity, size, shape, and surface properties .

Key Components

  • Light Source: LED or laser diode that emits light into the fiber.
  • Optical Fiber: Flexible strands of glass or plastic that transmit light to and from the sensing tip.
  • Photodetector/Amplifier: Receives the returned light and converts it into a measurable electrical signal. The amplifier often contains the light source and processing electronics .

Types of Fiber Optic Proximity Sensors

  1. Through-Beam Sensors: Transmitter and receiver fibers are placed opposite each other; detection occurs when an object blocks the light beam .
  2. Reflective Sensors: The emitter and receiver are in the same unit; the object reflects light back to the sensor. Variants include diffuse, retro-reflective, and polarized retro-reflective types .
  3. Fixed and Adjustable Field Sensors: Designed to detect objects within a specific distance range, with adjustable cutoff distances for precise control .
