ONU splitter OLT connection method

ONU splitter OLT connection method

Page Content

ONUs connect to an OLT through optical splitters in a PON network, using either one-stage (centralized) or two-stage (cascaded) splitting methods depending on network topology and user distribution.

Overview of OLT and ONU Connection

In a Passive Optical Network (PON), the OLT (Optical Line Terminal) serves as the central management device, controlling downstream and upstream data transmission, bandwidth allocation, and network management. The ONU (Optical Network Unit) converts optical signals from the OLT into electrical signals for end-user devices and aggregates upstream data for transmission back to the OLT . The connection between OLT and ONU is facilitated by the Optical Distribution Network (ODN), which includes optical fibers and passive optical splitters .

Splitter Connection Methods

One-Stage Splitting (Centralized Distribution)

  • Topology: OLT → Optical Splitter → ONU
  • Splitter Placement: Typically installed between the OLT and ONUs, sometimes centrally at the central office or distribution point.
  • Splitting Ratio: Commonly 1:32 or 1:64, allowing one OLT port to serve many ONUs.
  • Application: Suitable for densely populated urban areas where many users are concentrated, maximizing OLT port utilization and reducing fiber deployment costs .

Two-Stage Splitting (Cascaded Distribution)

  • Topology: OLT → Optical Splitter 1 → Optical Splitter 2 → ONU
  • Splitter Placement: First-stage splitter is usually in an optical distribution box; second-stage splitter is closer to end-users, such as in a local residence or community.
  • Splitting Ratios: First-stage splitter typically 1:4 or 1:8; second-stage splitter 1:8 or 1:16.
  • Application: Ideal for rural or dispersed areas with fewer users per node, reducing fiber usage while maintaining coverage .

Practical Connection Steps

  1. Fiber Preparation: Ensure fiber ends are clean and devices are powered on.
  2. Splitter Installation: Connect the OLT to the splitter using feeder fiber, then connect the splitter to ONUs using distribution fiber .
  3. ONU Activation: Send a serial number request from the OLT to the ONU. The OLT assigns a temporary ID, and the ONU comes online after configuration .
  4. Testing: Verify optical signal strength, check for packet loss, and ensure stable upstream and downstream communication .
  5. Customer Equipment Setup: Connect the ONU to routers, switches, or Wi-Fi access points for end-user access .

Considerations

  • Distance Limitations: Maximum OLT-to-ONU distance typically ranges from 20 to 60 km depending on fiber type and PON technology.
  • Bandwidth Allocation: OLT manages bandwidth to ensure smooth delivery of bursty data from multiple ONUs.
  • Maintenance: Regular monitoring and firmware updates are essential to maintain network performance . By selecting the appropriate splitting method and carefully planning splitter placement, network operators can optimize coverage, cost, and performance in FTTH or FTTB deployments.
