Distribution Box Overview

A household distribution box, also called a consumer unit or panel board, safely distributes electricity from the main supply to individual circuits. It contains MCBs (Miniature Circuit Breakers), busbars, terminal blocks, and protective devices for each circuit, along with live (phase), neutral, and earth connections .   • Protected by a 20A MCB for sockets or 10–16A for lighting.
  • The circuit starts at the distribution box and ends at the last outlet without looping back .

Wiring Steps

  1. Plan Circuit Layout: Assign each of the 13 circuits to specific areas or appliance groups, ensuring high-demand areas have dedicated circuits.
  2. Install MCBs: Mount 13 MCBs in the distribution box, rated according to the circuit type (32A for ring, 20A for radial sockets, 10–16A for lighting).
  3. Connect Busbars: Connect live, neutral, and earth busbars to the main supply and ensure proper insulation.
  4. Run Cables: Use 2.5 mm² copper cables for socket circuits and 1.5 mm² for lighting, maintaining voltage drop within 10% of supply voltage.
  5. Loop or Terminate: For ring circuits, loop cables through all outlets and return to the MCB. For radial circuits, terminate at the last outlet.
  6. Grounding: Connect all earth wires to the earth busbar to ensure safety.
  7. Label Circuits: Clearly mark each MCB with its corresponding area or appliance.
  8. Test: Perform continuity, insulation, and polarity tests before powering on .

Safety and Compliance

  • Ensure PVC or steel enclosures with proper IP/NEMA ratings.
  • Follow local electrical codes (NEC, IEC, or regional standards).
  • Include surge protection if necessary.
