How to wire the temperature sensor terminal box

Page Content

Proper wiring of a temperature sensor terminal box ensures accurate temperature readings and reliable signal transmission to your control system.

General Wiring Principles

When wiring a temperature sensor to a terminal box or transmitter, the main goal is to connect the sensor correctly while maintaining signal integrity. This involves:

  • Connecting the sensor leads to the input terminals of the terminal box or transmitter.
  • Completing the current loop for 4–20 mA transmitters by connecting the power supply and load (PLC or DCS input) in series with the transmitter output .
  • Observing polarity: Thermocouple wires must match the positive (+) and negative (-) terminals to avoid reversed readings .
  • Using proper extension wires: Thermocouple extension wires should match the sensor type to maintain accuracy .

RTD Sensor Wiring Configurations

RTD sensors (commonly Pt100) can be wired in 2-wire, 3-wire, or 4-wire configurations, each with different accuracy levels:

  • 2-Wire RTD: Simplest, but includes lead resistance in the measurement, suitable only for short cable runs .
  • 3-Wire RTD: Most common in industrial applications; allows the transmitter to compensate for lead resistance, improving accuracy .
  • 4-Wire RTD: Provides the highest accuracy by using separate wires for power and signal measurement, eliminating lead resistance errors. Best for short runs (<3 meters) or precision applications .

Terminal Box Connection Steps

  1. Turn off power to the field panel before starting wiring .
  2. Identify the sensor type (RTD or thermocouple) and the corresponding input terminals on the terminal box.
  3. Connect sensor leads to the designated input terminals, ensuring correct polarity and wire type.
  4. Connect the transmitter output to the control system input (PLC/DCS) in series with the loop power supply for 4–20 mA signals .
  5. Grounding: Follow manufacturer instructions for grounding to minimize noise interference.
  6. Verify connections visually and with a multimeter before powering up the system.
  7. Power on the system and check LED indicators or transmitter readings to confirm proper operation .

Best Practices

  • Use twisted, shielded cables to reduce electromagnetic interference .
  • Keep sensor and power wiring separate from high-voltage lines.
  • Always consult the manufacturer's manual for specific terminal box or transmitter wiring diagrams and safety instructions .
  • For long cable runs, consider 3-wire or 4-wire RTDs to maintain measurement accuracy. By following these steps and wiring standards, you ensure reliable, accurate temperature measurement and safe integration with your control system.
