Identification of Communication Optical Cable Categories

Identification of Communication Optical Cable Categories

Page Content

Communication optical cables are classified based on light propagation mode, fiber count, and protective jacket type, with single-mode and multimode fibers being the primary categories.

1. Classification by Mode of Light Propagation

  • Single-Mode Fiber (SMF): Transmits a single light mode, offering very low attenuation and supporting long-distance communication up to 100 km or more. It has a small core diameter (around 5–10 µm) and is ideal for high-speed, long-haul networks .
  • Multimode Fiber (MMF): Transmits multiple light modes, which can cause higher dispersion and is suitable for shorter distances. MMF is further divided into standards OM1, OM2, OM3, OM4, and OM5, each defining performance characteristics for high-speed networks .

2. Classification by Fiber Count

  • Simplex Cable: Contains a single fiber strand, typically used for one-way signal transmission or bidirectional transceivers (BiDi). It is suitable for applications where only one direction of communication is needed .
  • Duplex Cable: Contains two fiber strands, one for transmitting and one for receiving, enabling full-duplex communication. This is the standard choice for most two-way networking applications .

3. Classification by Jacket Type

  • PVC Jacket: Common and cost-effective, used for indoor applications. Flexible but less resistant to fire and chemicals .
  • LSZH (Low Smoke Zero Halogen): Produces minimal smoke and no toxic gases when burned, ideal for indoor areas with strict safety requirements .
  • Plenum-Rated: Designed for air-handling spaces like ceilings or ducts, offering high fire resistance and low smoke emission .

4. Additional Considerations

  • Armored Fiber Cables: Include protective layers to resist mechanical damage, suitable for harsh environments .
  • Core and Cladding: The optical fiber consists of a core (transmitting light) and cladding (reflecting light back into the core), with coatings to protect the fiber from damage .
  • Connector Types: Different connectors are used depending on space constraints, environmental conditions, and bandwidth requirements .

Summary

Communication optical cables are primarily classified by mode of light propagation (single-mode vs multimode), fiber count (simplex vs duplex), and jacket type (PVC, LSZH, plenum-rated). Additional factors like armored protection, core/cladding design, and connector type further define their suitability for specific applications, ranging from long-distance telecommunication to high-speed data networks within buildings .
