AdSS optical cable high hanging point

AdSS optical cable high hanging point

Page Content

The high hanging point of ADSS optical cables should be selected to minimize electrical field exposure, avoid collisions with conductors, and maintain safe sag and tension, typically 300–500 mm below or above cross arms depending on voltage and tower type.

Selection of Hanging Points

For high-voltage lines, the optical cable should be positioned where the electric field strength is minimal to prevent electrical corrosion. Specifically:

  • AT sheath ≤ 25 kV/m for lines 110 kV and above
  • PE sheath < 12 kV/m for lines 35 kV and below The cable should not cross the ground wire in horizontal or vertical projection to avoid whiplash during wind deflection, and it should not rub against the tower to reduce mechanical stress .

Recommended Heights by Voltage

  • 220 kV lines: Hang the cable on the first layer of the cross arm at the first node in the direction of the side conductor. For double-loop cables, use the middle intersection of the first and second layer cross-arms.
  • 110 kV lines: For tension towers, portal poles, or single poles, hang the cable 300–500 mm below the first-layer cross arm .
  • Cement door-type poles: Hang the cable 300–500 mm above the cable hoop under the cross arm .

Installation Considerations

  • Span and sag: ADSS cables are designed for long spans, often hundreds of meters, and have low thermal expansion, so temperature has minimal effect on sag .
  • Tension: Proper tension must be maintained to prevent excessive sag or mechanical damage. Use tensioners and follow the cable's rated tensile strength (RTS) specifications .
  • Hardware: Use tangent clamps for spans <350 ft with small angle changes, and AGS suspension for longer spans or larger angle changes. Dead-ends are required at angle changes ≥30° .
  • Safety: Personnel must use insulated tools and safety belts, and work aloft should be avoided in severe weather. Cable ends must be sealed to prevent moisture ingress, which can increase attenuation or break fibers .

Best Practices

  • Conduct a site survey to identify obstacles, high-voltage lines, and environmental factors.
  • Plan offset distances for safety when crossing roads or other utilities.
  • Install dampers or rodent-resistant jackets if necessary to prevent mechanical damage .
  • Follow the drum-specific hardware configuration to ensure proper tension and span alignment . By carefully selecting the hanging point and following these installation guidelines, ADSS optical cables can maintain mechanical stability, electrical safety, and long-term performance over overhead power lines.
