Ethernet optical module speed not included

Ethernet optical module speed not included

Page Content

If an Ethernet optical module does not show its speed, it is usually due to compatibility issues, port limitations, or outdated firmware.

Common Causes

1. Port and Module Compatibility Not all SFP modules are interchangeable. A 1G SFP cannot operate in a 10G-only SFP+ port, and some 10G SFP+ ports may or may not support 1G modules depending on the switch design. Similarly, SFP28 modules require ports specifically designed for 25G operation. If the module is physically compatible but the port does not support its speed, the link may remain down or report a lower speed . 2. Auto-Negotiation and Manual Speed Settings Some modules rely on auto-negotiation to establish the correct link speed. If auto-negotiation fails or is disabled, the speed may not be displayed. For example, forcing a 25G link on both ends may fail if the firmware or hardware does not fully support the module, even if the module is physically compatible . 3. Firmware or NVM Updates Outdated firmware or non-volatile memory (NVM) on network cards or switches can prevent proper recognition of newer SFP modules. Updating the device firmware often resolves issues where the “Negotiated Link Speed” or “Media Type” fields are not populated . 4. Active vs Passive Modules Some SFP modules, such as GPON-to-Ethernet converters, include internal processing and may be limited to 1G Ethernet even if the interface supports higher speeds. These modules often require specific configuration or authentication to function correctly . 5. Electrical and Signaling Differences Higher-speed modules like SFP+ and SFP28 shift certain signal conditioning to the host board. If the host board or port is not designed for the module's signaling speed, the link may fail or default to a lower speed .

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. Verify Port Compatibility: Check the switch or NIC documentation to ensure the port supports the module's speed.
  2. Update Firmware/NVM: Ensure the network device firmware is up to date to recognize newer modules.
  3. Check Auto-Negotiation: Enable auto-negotiation or manually configure the correct speed and duplex.
  4. Test with Known-Compatible Modules: Use a module verified to work with the device to isolate hardware issues.
  5. Review Module Type: Confirm whether the module is active or passive and whether it requires special configuration. By systematically checking compatibility, firmware, and configuration, most issues with missing or incorrect optical module speeds can be resolved .
