Fibre Channel primarily uses optical fiber and copper cabling to transmit high-speed data in storage area networks.

Optical Fiber

Optical fiber is the most common transmission medium for Fibre Channel, especially in data centers requiring high bandwidth and long-distance connectivity . It transmits data as light signals through a glass or plastic core using total internal reflection, which allows for:

  • High data rates: Supports speeds from 1 Gbps up to 128 Gbps in modern Fibre Channel implementations .
  • Long-distance communication: Can span distances up to 10 km or more depending on the fiber type and transceivers used .
  • Low signal loss and EMI immunity: Optical fiber is immune to electromagnetic interference and electrical noise, making it ideal for dense data center environments .
  • High reliability and scalability: Suitable for switched fabric topologies in SANs, allowing multiple devices to communicate efficiently . Copper Cabling

Fibre Channel can also run over copper cabling, which is typically used for shorter distances within racks or between nearby equipment . Copper offers:

  • Lower cost compared to fiber for short runs.
  • Ease of installation in existing infrastructure.
  • Support for high-speed data over limited distances, usually up to 10–15 meters for standard copper cables. Copper cabling is more susceptible to electromagnetic interference and signal attenuation over longer distances, which limits its use in large-scale SAN deployments.
