Unlike static aggregation, which requires manual configuration on both ends, dynamic aggregation uses the Link Aggregation Control Protocol (LACP) to automatically negotiate which physical interfaces participate in the aggregation group, ensuring compatibility and reducing configuration errors .

  • Passive: The switch responds to LACP requests but does not initiate them . This dynamic negotiation allows the network to adapt to topology changes and automatically recover from link failures.

Advanced Configurations

  • Multi-Chassis Link Aggregation (MLAG or MC-LAG): Extends aggregation across two physical switches, eliminating single points of failure and enabling both switches to forward traffic simultaneously. This setup improves redundancy, load balancing, and network convergence without relying on Spanning Tree Protocol .
