Low-power optical module 40G

Low-power optical module 40G

Page Content

Low-power 40G QSFP+ optical modules are installed in QSFP+ ports, connected to compatible fiber, and controlled via standard 2-wire serial interfaces for monitoring and low-power operation.

Installation and Handling

  1. Port Insertion: Insert the QSFP+ module into a QSFP+ port on the host device, ensuring proper alignment of the 38-pin edge connector. The module is hot-pluggable, so it can be inserted or removed while the system is powered on .
  2. Fiber Connection: Connect the optical fiber using LC (for LR4) or MPO/MTP (for SR4) connectors. Ensure the fiber ribbon is not twisted and guide pins are properly aligned to maintain channel integrity .
  3. Environmental Precautions: Avoid touching the optical interfaces and handle the module by its edges. Operate within the specified temperature and humidity ranges to prevent damage .

Power and Control

  • Power Supply: The module operates on a single +3.3V supply. Ensure the host provides stable voltage within the specified tolerance .
  • Low-Power Mode: Use the LVCMOS/LVTTL control signals to enable low-power mode. This can shut down unused channels to reduce power consumption .
  • Digital Diagnostics: The module supports a 2-wire I2C interface for monitoring temperature, voltage, optical power, and other parameters. The ModSelL pin must be held low to enable communication; when high, the module ignores I2C commands .

Optical Operation

  • Data Channels: The module aggregates four 10Gbps channels into a 40Gbps optical signal (LR4 or SR4). On reception, the signal is de-multiplexed back into four 10Gbps channels .
  • Wavelengths: LR4 modules use CWDM wavelengths (1271, 1291, 1311, 1331 nm) over single-mode fiber, while SR4 modules operate over multimode fiber (OM3/OM4) with parallel channels .
  • Reach: LR4 modules can reach up to 10–30 km depending on the model, while SR4 modules typically support 100–150 meters over multimode fiber .

Safety

  • Laser Safety: The module is a Class 1M laser device. Avoid direct eye exposure to the optical output. Follow IEC-825/CDRH standards for laser safety .
  • Handling: Do not disassemble the module. Ensure proper grounding to prevent electrostatic discharge damage .

Maintenance and Troubleshooting

  • Channel Shutdown: Unused channels can be disabled via the I2C interface to conserve power and reduce heat .
  • Diagnostics: Monitor optical power, temperature, and voltage through the digital diagnostic interface to detect potential issues early .
  • Firmware/Compatibility: Ensure the module is compatible with the host device and firmware supports QSFP+ MSA standards for proper operation . Following these instructions ensures safe, reliable operation of low-power 40G optical modules while maintaining optimal performance and longevity.
