Fc san does not require an additional storage interface

Page Content

Fibre Channel SAN typically requires a switch or additional interface for proper connectivity, but in certain configurations like Cisco UCS end-host mode, direct connections without a SAN switch are possible.

Direct-Attached vs SAN Connectivity

Fibre Channel SANs are designed to connect multiple hosts to shared storage through a SAN fabric, which usually includes switches, HBAs, and storage arrays to manage traffic, zoning, and access control . Direct connections from hosts to storage without a SAN switch are generally not supported in standard FC SAN deployments because NPIV (N_Port ID Virtualization) is required to manage multiple virtual ports over a single physical port . This ensures proper zoning and LUN visibility across hosts.

However, in Cisco UCS environments, there are exceptions. When using end-host mode (also known as N Port Virtualization, NPV), the Fabric Interconnect can act as an end host, allowing servers to connect directly to storage without a SAN switch. In this mode, vHBAs are pinned to FC uplink ports, and the fabric interconnect presents the ports as server N-ports to the storage network . This setup avoids loops and simplifies direct-attached storage (DAS) configurations, but it has limitations, such as the inability to repin vHBAs if an uplink fails.

Key Considerations

  • Switch Mode vs End-Host Mode: Switch mode is the traditional FC switching mode and is required when connecting multiple storage devices or when a SAN exists upstream. End-host mode allows direct connections without a SAN switch but is limited to specific UCS configurations .
  • Zoning and Access Control: Even in direct connections, proper zoning or igroup configuration is necessary to control which hosts can access which LUNs .
  • Performance and Scalability: Direct connections without a SAN switch may be suitable for small deployments or single UCS domains, but larger environments benefit from a SAN fabric for redundancy, scalability, and centralized management .

Summary

While FC SANs generally require a switch or additional interface to function correctly, certain UCS configurations in end-host mode allow direct connections to storage without a SAN switch. This is effectively a hybrid between DAS and SAN, providing simplified connectivity for smaller or isolated deployments, but it is not the standard approach for enterprise SAN environments. Proper configuration of vHBAs, zoning, and port assignments is essential to ensure reliable operation.
