Step 1: Safety and Installation

  • Remove the dust plug from the optical port and keep it for future use.
  • Ensure the module is correctly oriented and gently insert it until it clicks. If it does not fit, rotate 180 degrees and try again.
  • Do not connect optical fibers until the module is securely seated.
  • Measure input optical power to ensure it is within the normal range to avoid overloading the module .

Step 2: Interface Mode Configuration

Huawei devices often have combo interfaces that can operate in electrical or optical mode. To enable the optical interface:

  • Enter system view: system-view
  • Switch to optical mode: combo enable fiber
  • To revert to electrical mode: undo combo enable fiber
  • For 10GE optical interfaces on combo ports: port combination-mode 10GE interface interface-name and revert with undo port combination-mode 10GE interface interface-name .
  • Ensure the same configuration is applied on the peer device to maintain connectivity.

Step 3: Verify Module and Port Status

After installation and mode configuration, check the module and port status:

  • Display interface status: display interface brief
  • Check transceiver information: display transceiver interface xgigabitethernet 0/0/2 verbose
  • Run diagnostics: display transceiver diagnosis interface interface-type interface-number to view digital diagnostic monitoring (DMM) data such as optical power, wavelength, temperature, voltage, and current .
  • Ensure the module type matches the fiber type (single-mode vs. multi-mode) and the interface speed (e.g., do not use a 10G module on a 1G port), .

Step 4: PON Interface Configuration (if applicable)

For routers acting as ONUs in a PON network:

  • Configure the PON interface to auto-negotiate with the upstream OLT.
  • If switching between EPON and GPON modes, reset the PON board to trigger a new negotiation.
  • Be cautious when changing modes, as active service data may be interrupted .

Step 5: Troubleshooting

  • If the port shows Administratively DOWN, enable it using undo shutdown.
  • Perform a loopback test by connecting the fiber jumper to the same module to check for abnormal conditions.
