Setting up the fiber optic sensor

Setting up the fiber optic sensor

Page Content

Configuring a fiber optic sensor involves proper installation, connection to the amplifier, and calibration to ensure accurate detection or measurement.

1. Sensor Selection and Specification

Before installation, select the appropriate fiber optic sensor type for your application. Options include photoelectric fiber sensors for object detection in tight spaces or fiber optic strain sensors for distributed strain measurements . Consider factors such as sensing range, environmental conditions, and whether the sensor will be surface-mounted or embedded.

2. Surface Preparation and Mounting

For strain or distributed sensing applications, proper surface preparation is critical:

  • Clean the surface to remove dust, grease, or debris.
  • Abrade or lightly roughen the surface to improve adhesive bonding.
  • Condition or neutralize the surface if required by the adhesive .
  • Use adhesives like M-Bond 200 or AE-10 for permanent installations, or double-sided tape for temporary setups .
  • After bonding, allow the adhesive to cure fully and optionally apply a protective layer such as RTV silicone to shield the fiber from environmental stress . For photoelectric fiber sensors, mount the fiber head close to the target object while keeping the amplifier unit in a safe, accessible location. The fiber cable transmits light between the head and amplifier, so route it carefully to avoid sharp bends or mechanical stress .

3. Electrical and Optical Connection

  • Connect the fiber optic cable to the amplifier or control unit.
  • Ensure the emitter and receiver fibers are correctly aligned if using through-beam or reflective configurations.
  • Verify that the amplifier is powered and that the fiber is securely seated in the connectors .

4. Sensor Configuration

  • Access the amplifier settings to configure detection thresholds, sensitivity, and response time. Many systems provide basic and advanced settings for fine-tuning .
  • For strain sensors, configure the data acquisition software to define measurement points, sampling rate, and calibration parameters .
  • Test the sensor by introducing known stimuli (e.g., object presence for photoelectric sensors or controlled strain for FOS) and adjust settings until the output is stable and accurate.

5. Calibration and Verification

  • Perform a calibration routine to ensure the sensor output matches expected values.
  • For distributed strain sensors, compare readings with reference gauges if available .
  • For photoelectric sensors, verify detection across the full range of target positions and environmental conditions .

6. Maintenance and Protection

  • Inspect fiber routing regularly to prevent kinks or damage.
  • Ensure protective coatings or housings remain intact, especially in harsh environments.
  • Recalibrate periodically to maintain measurement accuracy. By following these steps, a fiber optic sensor can be reliably installed, configured, and maintained for accurate detection or measurement in industrial, laboratory, or structural monitoring applications .
