Bare Fiber

Bare fiber is the fundamental glass strand of an optical fiber without any protective coatings, buffers, or jackets. It typically has a diameter of 125–250 microns and consists of a core and cladding designed to transmit light signals (single-mode for long distances, multi-mode for short-range applications) . Bare fiber is extremely fragile, breaking under just 1–2% strain, and is mainly used in laboratories, R&D, or for splicing into protected cables . It is not suitable for direct field deployment without additional protection.

Optical Cable

An optical cable wraps one or more bare fibers in protective layers to ensure durability and performance in real-world environments. These layers may include buffer tubes, strength members (FRP, steel, or aramid), fillers, water-blocking materials, and outer jackets (PVC, LSZH, PE) . Optical cables come in various types:

  • Indoor tight-buffered cables: Flexible, suitable for trays, risers, and plenum spaces.
  • Outdoor loose-tube cables: Water-blocked, UV-resistant, and sometimes armored for aerial or direct-burial applications.
  • Specialized cables: ADSS for self-supporting aerial spans, tactical or military cables for rugged environments .

Lower Cable

The term lower cable generally refers to the installed fiber optic cable in a network, often positioned in ducts, conduits, or trays. These cables are already protected and routed for long-term use, unlike bare fiber which requires immediate protection. Lower cables are designed to withstand environmental stresses, mechanical pulls, and installation conditions while maintaining signal integrity .
