Branch Current Method in Relay Protection

Branch Current Method in Relay Protection

Page Content

The branch current method is used in relay protection to calculate fault currents in each branch of a power system, enabling proper relay settings and selective protection.

Overview of the Branch Current Method

The branch current method is a systematic network analysis technique where currents in each branch of a circuit are assumed in arbitrary directions. Using Kirchhoff's Current Law (KCL) and Kirchhoff's Voltage Law (KVL) along with Ohm's law, equations are formulated for each unknown current. Solving these simultaneous equations provides the current in every branch, which is essential for determining voltage drops and fault currents in the network .

Steps in the Branch Current Method

  1. Assign branch currents: Arbitrarily choose directions for all branch currents in the network.
  2. Apply KCL at nodes: Sum of currents entering and leaving a node equals zero, forming node equations.
  3. Apply KVL in loops: Sum of voltage drops around each loop equals zero, forming loop equations.
  4. Express voltages in terms of currents: Use Ohm's law (V = IR) to relate branch voltages to branch currents.
  5. Solve simultaneous equations: Determine all branch currents, including those under fault conditions .

Application in Relay Protection

In power system protection, the branch current method is used to calculate fault currents at different points in the network, which is critical for setting overcurrent relays and ensuring selective protection . By knowing the current in each branch during a fault:

  • Relay settings can be determined to operate only for currents exceeding a set threshold.
  • Time grading can be applied, where relays closer to the fault operate faster than upstream relays, ensuring selectivity.
  • Inverse time relays can be coordinated, as their operating time depends on the magnitude of the fault current, which is calculated using the branch current method .

Example in Distribution Systems

For a radial feeder network:

  1. Calculate branch currents for a fault at the end of a feeder using the branch current method.
  2. Determine the current seen by each relay along the feeder.
  3. Set the pickup current and time delay for each relay to ensure the relay nearest the fault operates first, while upstream relays act as backup .

Advantages

  • Provides accurate fault current distribution in complex networks.
  • Supports numerical relay coordination, including modern multifunctional relays.
  • Ensures selective protection and minimizes unnecessary outages.

Summary

The branch current method is a fundamental tool in relay protection, allowing engineers to calculate branch currents under normal and fault conditions. These calculations inform relay settings, grading times, and coordination schemes, ensuring that protective devices operate reliably and selectively to isolate faults while maintaining system stability .
