How to splice fiber optic cables with FC interfaces

Page Content

Splicing FC fiber optic cables involves preparing the fiber, choosing fusion or mechanical splicing, and carefully aligning the fibers to ensure low-loss, reliable connections.

Step 1: Gather Tools and Materials

To splice FC fiber optic cables, you will need:

  • Fiber optic cleaver for precise end preparation
  • Fusion splicer (preferred for permanent, low-loss splices) or mechanical splice kit
  • Fiber stripper to remove protective coatings
  • FC pigtails if connecting to pre-terminated equipment
  • Cleaning supplies (isopropyl alcohol, lint-free wipes)
  • Splice protectors or heat-shrink sleeves for fusion splices .

Step 2: Prepare the Fiber

  1. Strip the outer jacket of the fiber cable carefully to expose the bare fiber.
  2. Clean the fiber with alcohol to remove any debris or oils.
  3. Cleave the fiber using a precision cleaver to create a flat, smooth end. Proper cleaving is critical for low-loss splicing .

Step 3: Choose the Splicing Method

  • Fusion Splicing:
    • Align the two fiber ends in a fusion splicer.
    • The splicer uses an electric arc to melt and fuse the glass ends together, producing a permanent, low-loss connection (typically 0.01–0.03 dB loss).
    • After splicing, place a splice protector over the joint to prevent damage .
  • Mechanical Splicing:
    • Insert the fibers into a mechanical splice sleeve with an index-matching gel.
    • The fibers are held in precise alignment without permanent fusion.
    • Typical loss is slightly higher (0.1–0.3 dB), but this method is faster and allows temporary connections .

Step 4: Connect to FC Interfaces

  • If using FC pigtails, fusion splice the bare end of the pigtail to the prepared fiber.
  • The factory-terminated FC connector on the pigtail plugs directly into the equipment or patch panel.
  • Ensure the connector is clean and properly seated to minimize back reflection and insertion loss .

Step 5: Test the Splice

  • Use an optical power meter or OTDR to verify the splice quality.
  • Check for low insertion loss and minimal back reflection.
  • Proper testing ensures the splice meets network performance requirements .

Tips for Success

  • Always handle fibers carefully to avoid breakage or contamination.
  • Maintain a clean workspace and dispose of fiber scraps safely.
  • Fusion splicing is preferred for long-term, high-performance networks, while mechanical splicing is suitable for temporary or emergency repairs . By following these steps, you can achieve reliable, low-loss splices for FC fiber optic cables, ensuring optimal network performance.
