How to configure a multi-carrier access switch

How to configure a multi-carrier access switch

Page Content

Configuring a multi-carrier access switch involves setting up link aggregation, VLANs, and Multichassis LACP (mLACP) to ensure redundancy, load balancing, and high availability.

1. Plan Your Network Topology

Before configuration, determine the following:

  • Number of carriers and upstream points of attachment (PoAs)
  • Redundancy requirements (dual-homing devices to multiple PoAs)
  • VLAN segmentation for different services or customer traffic
  • Bandwidth requirements to decide the number of aggregated links

2. Configure VLANs

VLANs separate traffic for different services or clients:

  • Create VLANs on the switch and assign IP addresses to VLAN interfaces
  • Configure trunk ports to carry multiple VLANs between switches or access points
  • Assign access ports to specific VLANs for end devices or APs ( ) Example:

CodeCopyvlan 100name Service1interface vlan 100ip address 192.168.100.1 255.255.255.0

3. Set Up Link Aggregation

Link aggregation combines multiple physical links into a single logical link to increase bandwidth and provide redundancy:

  • Manual mode: Add member interfaces to an Eth-Trunk without LACP
  • LACP mode: Use the Link Aggregation Control Protocol for dynamic negotiation
  • Ensure all member interfaces have the same speed, duplex, and Ethernet type ( ) Example:

CodeCopyinterface range GigabitEthernet1/0/1 - 2channel-group 1 mode active

4. Configure Multichassis LACP (mLACP)

mLACP allows a device to connect to two upstream switches for redundancy:

  • Each PoA must have a port-channel with the minimum number of links configured
  • Enable LACP fast switchover to speed convergence
  • Ensure equal number of links to each PoA and consistent system priorities ( ) Key commands:

CodeCopyport-channel min-links 2errdisable recovery cause mlacp

5. Enable Multicast Handling (Optional)

If multicast traffic is used (e.g., IPTV or video streaming):

  • Enable IGMP snooping to forward multicast only to interested ports
  • Configure Layer 2 multicast VLANs to isolate traffic
  • Verify multicast group membership and forwarding entries ( )

6. Verify Configuration

  • Check VLAN and trunk status
  • Verify link aggregation and mLACP status
  • Test failover by disconnecting one PoA and ensuring traffic continues through the other
  • Monitor multicast traffic if applicable

7. Best Practices

  • Keep firmware updated to support mLACP and LACP features
  • Document VLANs, port-channels, and PoAs for troubleshooting
  • Avoid mixing different Ethernet types or speeds in aggregated links
  • Use PoE settings carefully if powering access points By following these steps, a multi-carrier access switch can provide high availability, load balancing, and efficient traffic management across multiple upstream carriers.
