Optical Splitter Disassembly

Optical Splitter Disassembly

Page Content

Disassembling an optical splitter requires careful handling to avoid damaging delicate fibers and internal waveguides, with different approaches for FBT and PLC types.

Understanding the Splitter Type

Optical splitters are mainly of two types: Fused Biconical Taper (FBT) and Planar Lightwave Circuit (PLC). FBT splitters are made by fusing and tapering two or more optical fibers, forming a waveguide inside a protective tube, often stainless steel or quartz-coated, with glue securing the fibers . PLC splitters use lithographically fabricated waveguides on a silica glass substrate, enclosed in a compact package, and are more sensitive to mechanical stress . Knowing the type is crucial because PLC splitters are more fragile and difficult to disassemble without specialized tools.

General Disassembly Steps

  1. Safety Precautions:
    • Wear safety glasses to protect against fiber shards.
    • Avoid looking directly into fiber ends, as residual laser light may be present.
    • Work in a clean, static-free environment to prevent contamination of optical surfaces.
  2. External Housing Removal:
    • Most splitters are encased in plastic or metal tubes. Carefully remove any screws or clips.
    • For FBT splitters, the stainless steel tube can sometimes be gently pried open, but excessive force may break the fused fibers .
    • PLC splitters are usually sealed; opening them may permanently damage the waveguide.
  3. Internal Component Access:
    • FBT splitters contain tapered fiber regions where light is coupled. These are extremely delicate; avoid bending or touching the fibers.
    • PLC splitters contain a silica substrate with integrated waveguides. Disassembly often exposes the chip, which is sensitive to dust, scratches, and mechanical stress .
  4. Handling Fibers:
    • Use fiber tweezers and magnification to manipulate fibers.
    • Avoid touching the fiber cores; contamination can degrade performance.
    • If the goal is inspection, use a fiber microscope rather than physically separating fibers.

Considerations and Risks

  • FBT splitters can sometimes be partially disassembled for educational purposes, but the splitting ratio may change if the fused region is disturbed.
  • PLC splitters are generally not designed to be opened; attempting to do so usually destroys the device.
  • Disassembly is mostly recommended for training, inspection, or failure analysis, not for reuse.
  • Always document the orientation and connections before disassembly to avoid confusion during reassembly.

Tools and Accessories

  • Precision screwdrivers or spudgers for housing removal
  • Fiber optic tweezers and clamps
  • Magnifying glass or microscope for inspection
  • Anti-static mat and gloves to prevent contamination By following these guidelines, you can safely examine the internal structure of optical splitters while minimizing the risk of damage to the fibers or waveguides .
