How to install fiber optic cable suspension lines

Fiber optic cable suspension is installed using ADSS suspension clamps to safely support aerial cables while minimizing mechanical stress and vibration.

Step 1 – Planning and Surveying

Before installation, map the cable route and identify existing or planned poles/towers. Check for obstacles such as trees, power lines, or other utilities, and obtain necessary permits. Determine pole spacing, typically 30–50 meters apart, depending on cable type and environmental conditions .

Step 2 – Pole Preparation

Ensure poles are structurally sound. Install hardware such as brackets, suspension clamps, or anchor clamps to support the fiber optic cable. For vertical routing, use down lead clamps to secure the cable along the pole .

Step 3 – Cable Preparation

Select an aerial fiber optic cable with a weather-resistant jacket and strength members to withstand wind, ice, and environmental stress. Unroll the cable carefully to avoid kinks or damage. Inspect the cable for defects before stringing .

Step 4 – Installing Suspension Clamps

1. Mark the cable position on the pole or tower where the clamp will be installed .
2. Insert the cable into the rubber clamp insert, which protects the cable jacket from mechanical damage and environmental exposure .
3. Attach the aluminum clamp housing over the insert, ensuring it is securely fastened. The housing provides corrosion resistance and mechanical strength .
4. Wrap inner and outer preformed armor rods around the cable to distribute pressure evenly, reduce stress concentration, and improve vibration resistance .
5. Position the clamp on the pole bracket and secure it. Suspension clamps allow the cable to hang freely with minimal tension while maintaining bending stress within safe limits .

Step 5 – Stringing the Cable

Use a pulling mechanism or winch to string the cable between poles. Attach the cable to the suspension clamps, ensuring proper tension to prevent sagging but avoid over-tightening, which can damage the fiber . For long spans, consider tension clamps at the ends or at points where the cable changes direction .

Step 6 – Vibration and Stress Management

Install spiral vibration dampers (SVDs) or Stockbridge dampers if the cable is exposed to high winds to prevent aeolian vibration, which can damage fibers over time . Ensure clamps are properly aligned and interlocked to prevent slipping or shaking.

Step 7 – Splicing, Termination, and Testing

At designated points, splice or terminate the cable using fusion splicing for minimal signal loss. Test the network with an OTDR to verify signal integrity and ensure the installation meets performance standards .

• Wear protective leather gloves when handling cables and climbing poles; use rubber gloves near electrical circuits .
• Use a safety harness on bucket trucks or aerial lifts.
