Strength Model of Congo Fiberglass Cable Tray

Page Content

Congo Fiberglass Cable Trays are designed to provide high strength-to-weight performance, functioning structurally as beams under uniform loads, with load capacity influenced by resin type, tray thickness, and support span.

Structural Behavior

Fiberglass cable trays operate functionally as beams when loaded with cables. The tray's strength depends on its beam configuration:

  • Simple Beam: A straight tray section supported but not fixed at ends; allows deflection under load.
  • Continuous Beam: Extends over multiple supports, distributing load more evenly.
  • Cantilever Beam: Projects from a support; carries less load than a simple beam.
  • Fixed Beam: Ends rigidly attached to supports, increasing load capacity and reducing bending or twisting, commonly used in rungs and strut-type supports . The working load capacity is determined by the tray's ability to support the static weight of cables over a given support span, typically 8, 10, or 12 feet .

Material and Resin Systems

Congo Fiberglass Cable Trays are manufactured using pultruded fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP/GRP), which provides:

  • High corrosion resistance compared to steel or aluminum, suitable for chemical, offshore, and industrial environments .
  • Non-conductive and non-magnetic properties, reducing electrical hazards and interference with radio or radar signals .
  • High strength-to-weight ratio, with trays weighing approximately one-third of equivalent steel trays while maintaining equal or superior load capacity . Two primary resin systems are used:
  • Polyester Fire Retardant (FR-P): Common for general industrial applications.
  • Vinylester Fire Retardant (FR-VE): Used in highly corrosive environments with strong acids, alkalis, or halogenated compounds . A synthetic surface veil is applied during pultrusion to create a resin-rich layer, enhancing corrosion protection and UV resistance .

Tray Thickness and Dimensions

Tray thickness directly affects strength and durability. Congo Fiberglass Cable Trays are available in thicknesses from 1.2 mm to 3.0 mm and widths from 50 mm to 1000 mm, allowing customization based on load requirements and installation conditions .

Advantages of the Strength Model

  • Lightweight yet strong, reducing installation and transportation challenges.
  • Durable in harsh environments, minimizing maintenance and replacement costs.
  • Flexible design, accommodating ladder, perforated, and molded fittings for complex cable routing .

Summary

The strength model of Congo Fiberglass Cable Tray relies on its beam-like structural behavior, high-performance pultruded FRP material, and optimized resin systems. Proper selection of tray thickness, support span, and resin type ensures that the tray can safely support cable loads while providing long-term durability in corrosive or industrial environments .
