Measures for Laying Optical Cables

Measures for Laying Optical Cables

Page Content

Proper optical cable installation requires careful handling, adherence to bend radius and tension limits, environmental protection, and compliance with industry standards to ensure performance and longevity.

Cable Handling and Storage

Optical fiber cables must be handled with care to prevent mechanical damage. Reels should remain in their protective covering until installation, and storage areas should be flat, firm, and free from sharp objects or flooding risks. Cables should not be exposed to temperatures outside the specified range, and LSZH sheathed cables are particularly sensitive to mechanical stress and temperature variations during installation .

Bend Radius and Pulling Tension

Maintaining the minimum bend radius is critical. For loose tube and ribbon cables, the bend radius should be at least 20 times the cable diameter during installation under tension and 10 times during static conditions. Exceeding this radius can deform the cable core and increase attenuation . Pulling tension must not exceed the maximum specified for the cable, typically around 600 lbf for OSP cables, and cable grips should be applied carefully to avoid jacket damage .

Installation Techniques

  • Figure-8 Loops: When laying cable from reels, use figure-8 loops to prevent twisting. The loop size depends on cable stiffness, commonly 2–4 meters, and loops should be slightly offset to minimize mechanical pressure .
  • Avoid Sharp Turns: Turn-backs and sharp directional changes should be avoided to prevent fiber stress .
  • Surface Protection: When laying cable on the ground, use plastic sheets to keep it clean and avoid contact with sharp objects .
  • Swivels: Use swivels at the cable end during pulling to prevent twist accumulation .

Environmental and Safety Considerations

  • Temperature: Respect the maximum and minimum installation temperatures specified for each cable type .
  • Underground Utilities: Locate existing utilities before excavation to prevent damage .
  • Mechanical Protection: Minimize pressure at crossing points, especially for armored cables, and avoid crushing loads exceeding specified limits .
  • Eye and Skin Protection: Fiber scraps can be hazardous; technicians should use appropriate personal protective equipment .

Compliance with Standards

Installation should follow recognized standards such as FOA Installation Standards, NECA/NEIS guidelines, and ITU-T L.163 for remote or challenging environments. These standards cover cable selection, route planning, tension and temperature considerations, handling, bend protection, and pilot testing to ensure reliability and minimize risks .

Summary

Successful optical cable laying requires a combination of careful handling, adherence to mechanical limits, environmental protection, and compliance with industry standards. Following these technical measures ensures minimal signal loss, long-term reliability, and safe installation practices.
