Hierarchical Circuit Protection

A three-level distribution system typically consists of:

  1. Primary Distribution (Main Distribution Cabinet): Use an Air Circuit Breaker (ACB) with short-time delay to coordinate with downstream devices. The rated current should be 1.2–1.5 times the transformer capacity, and the short-circuit breaking capacity must exceed the maximum short-circuit current at the installation point .
  2. Secondary Distribution (Sub-Distribution Cabinets): Install Molded-Case Circuit Breakers (MCCBs). Thermomagnetic types are suitable for general loads, while electronic types are ideal for precise protection and communication requirements. Ensure selectivity with the upstream ACB and use D-type tripping curves for motor circuits .
  3. Tertiary Distribution (Switch Boxes / Final Distribution Box): Use Miniature Circuit Breakers (MCBs) mounted on DIN rails. Type B curves are for resistive loads, Type C for mixed loads and sockets, and Type D for inductive loads like motors . Include RCBOs or RCDs for leakage protection to disconnect only the faulty circuit while keeping upstream circuits intact .

Surge Protection

  • Level 1 SPD: Installed at the main distribution box to absorb high-energy surges from lightning or switching events. Should handle surge currents ≥12.5 kA and maximum discharge ≥100 kA per phase .
  • Level 2 SPD: Protects sub-distribution cabinets by absorbing residual surge energy.
  • Level 3 SPD: Installed at the final distribution box to protect sensitive equipment from transient overvoltages, ensuring long-term stable operation .

Grounding and Wiring

  • Connect the three-phase wires (A/B/C) to the corresponding SPD terminals.
  • Use a dedicated surge protection grounding terminal separate from the power ground or protective earth .
  • Ensure proper copper busbar connections in the main cabinet for reliable conductivity .

Installation and Physical Protection

  • Adopt a bottom-in, bottom-out structure for the main cabinet with front doors for easy access .
  • Use rainproof tops for outdoor installations and spray-painted exteriors for sub-distribution boxes to enhance safety and aesthetics .
  • Follow the principle of “one machine, one switch, one leakage, one box, one lock” to prevent multiple devices from being controlled by a single switch .

Coordination and Selectivity

  • Ensure current selectivity: upstream breakers' instantaneous trip settings must exceed the maximum downstream fault current.
  • Apply time selectivity: upstream breakers operate with a short delay, while downstream breakers act instantaneously.
  • Use energy selectivity and area-selective interlocking for precise coordination, especially in high-capacity systems . By implementing these measures, a three-level distribution box can achieve reliable, safe, and selective protection, minimizing downtime and protecting both equipment and personnel.
