Broadband Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) is a fiber-optic technology that transmits multiple optical signals simultaneously over a single fiber, each using a distinct wavelength, to dramatically increase data capacity.

Overview

Broadband WDM allows multiple independent data streams to travel through a single optical fiber by assigning each stream a unique wavelength of light, effectively turning one fiber into a multi-lane highway for data transmission . This technique maximizes the bandwidth of fiber-optic cables, enabling high-capacity communication without laying additional fibers .

How It Works

1. Data Conversion: Each data stream is converted into optical signals using lasers at specific wavelengths.
2. Multiplexing: A multiplexer (MUX) combines these signals into a single composite beam for transmission through the fiber.
3. Transmission: The combined signal travels along the fiber, with each wavelength remaining independent and non-interfering.
4. Demultiplexing: At the receiving end, a demultiplexer (DEMUX) separates the wavelengths back into individual data streams, which are then converted to electrical signals for delivery .

Types of WDM

• Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing (CWDM): Uses widely spaced wavelengths (typically ~20 nm apart), supporting fewer channels (around 18), suitable for shorter distances and lower-cost applications .
• Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM): Uses tightly spaced wavelengths (as close as 0.8 nm apart), supporting many channels and very high capacities, ideal for long-haul and backbone networks .
