Figure-8 Loop Technique

When laying optical fiber loops on a surface, the figure-8 pattern is recommended to prevent twisting and kinking of the cable. The cable is laid on the ground in a large "8" shape, with a half twist on one side and reversed on the other. The size of the loop typically ranges from 2 to 4 meters (6–12 feet) depending on cable stiffness and diameter. Each loop should be slightly offset from the previous one to minimize mechanical pressure, and the cable end should rest on a plastic sheet or tarp to keep it clean during installation . Once the loops are laid, the cable is picked up and flipped over so the end to be pulled to the next location is on top. This ensures smooth pulling without introducing twists or kinks .

Handling and Storage Considerations

  • Pull, don't push the cable to avoid violating the minimum bend radius .
  • Monitor the supply reel during installation to prevent over-tensioning or twisting .
  • Use protective materials on reels until installation to prevent damage .
  • Lubricate the cable when pulling through conduits to reduce friction and risk of breakage, ensuring compatibility with the cable jacket .
  • Avoid mechanical pressure at crossing points, especially for armored cables .

  • Identify the cable loop locations and manholes before laying, particularly for outdoor duct installations .
  • Ensure pipeline conditioning and cleaning of manholes if necessary.
  • Follow security, signaling, and environmental measures depending on the surroundings .
  • Only authorized personnel should perform cable laying, and supervision is required before, during, and after installation .

  • For long pulls, divide the cable into shorter sections using the figure-8 method at intermediate locations .
  • Observe vertical rise limits and allow for thermal expansion in outdoor installations to prevent fiber breakage .
